Goldsmith Brice and Burk receive all state track honors while coach Frank Elkins leads fundraising for a community charity. Kingsville defeats Breckenridge in a dramatic high school football clash ending with praise from local sportswriters.
Ten members from Evening and Downtown Lions Clubs joined the district midwinter Lions convention in Midland. Finis Davis of Lions International spoke at the 7 p.m. banquet as registration opened at the Scharbauer Hotel. About 25 percent of each club’s average attendance was expected.
Carruth was elected president of the Andrews Savings and Loan Association at the first annual stockholders meeting. J A Ulmer was named executive vice president and general manager, with Dr Z W Hutcheson Jr as secretary treasurer. Board members include Carruth Ulmer Hutcheson Ramsey Young Barber Raburn Shepherd Peacock Hayes and Smith. meeting held in the junior high school cafeteria.
Andrews High School schedules mid term exams for three tests per day at ninety minutes each. Exams start Thursday and run through Friday with a weekend break before report cards arrive the following Thursday.
The Zoning and Planning Commission postponed approval of the Grandview addition plat in northeast Andrews to meet with Ruth Davidson developer Joseph Luchini Midland engineer and Bob Gilliam. They cited block lengths lot sizes and coordination with Terrace Hills as concerns and aim to resolve them. In another vote all but chairman Sybesma approved Peck's grocery in an apartment area with conditions that no objections were raised and building rules must be met. The site is lot nine block one Townsend addition in an apartment zone.
Four treaters were declared a complete loss after a Wednesday night blaze about 12.5 miles west of Andrews at a Phillips lease. It was the third fire at the site in three years, with a second fire eight months earlier. Firemen waited two hours due to gas pressure. A separate Friday incident at a Murphy Well Servicing rig, about 15 miles west of Andrews, caused minor damage after gas blowback ignited.
J W James opens the Main 66 Cafe at 700 North Main in Andrews with a formal Sunday opening offering free coffee and cake until 11 am. James, a veteran cafe operator previously in Mc Camey for 10 years, leased the restaurant from Jim Underwood. The menu features steaks barbecue and Mexican dishes. Hours run 5 am to 10 pm.
Andrews County Tax Assessor Floyd Peacock reports 315 poll tax receipts issued with January 3 deadline. He notes the 1958 off year had 316 at this date and expects about 2,260 receipts this year, with the fee set at 1.75 dollars in the county courthouse office.
Gulf Oil completes No 3 FY State Consolidated in the Triple N area, producing from the lower Pennsylvanian with 204 barrels of 39.9 gravity oil in 24 hours through a 20/64 choke. Nearby No 1 BN State Consolidated also showed daily potential of 288 barrels in the same zone. Other wells include Honolulu No 1-N J E Parker wildcat two miles south, Pan American University Consol VII project, and multiple new tests in Bakker and Shafter Lake fields.
Kenneth A Sutton announces progress in the annual school census covering Andrews county. Workers started January 2 in four districts counting school age children preschoolers and adults. Devonian and Glorieta zones nearing completion with calls back expected this week as county population totals are updated.
Local groups outline plans for the March of Dimes drive with the Dimes for Discs fundraiser ending Saturday. Andrews Junior High and High School students team with KACT to collect donations in exchange for song requests. Lambda Nu of Epsilon Sigma Alpha hosts a bridge benefit at the Community Building with proceeds to the campaign.

Andrews begins conference basketball with a Friday game versus Monahans after a 64 52 loss to Levelland. The 4 2 Mustangs lost to the Lobos Seminole Indians and Hobbs in tournaments. Probable starters are Housty Brewer Roy Max Perrin Paul Harrison Larry Sheppard and Douglas Jeffrey.
Postmaster Harold Roberts announced Saturday that postal receipts for the second quarter of the 1959 fiscal year totaled $25,818, up from $20,728 a year earlier. He attributed part of the gain to the postage rate increase enacted by the 85th Congress.
B P W Club presents Mystorama headlined by Boxley and Marie on Jan 30 at 8 p.m. in Andrews High School Auditorium. Proceeds fund park benches at Humble Means camp park. Admission 1 adult 50 cents student. Mrs Ruth Thomas club president calls it a thrilling fun filled theater evening with feats like Pirate's Treasure Chest Egyptian Fire Mystery Bewitched Parasol and Sorcery From India.
Members of the Andrews County Bar Association elected Russell D. Austin county attorney as president at a Thursday meeting in the Commissioners Court Room. Henry F. Guillet was named vice president and G. Bert Smith Jr. secretary treasurer. The group revised the minimum fee schedule to take effect January 8. Outgoing officers were Max Ramsey president, Guillet vice president, and others.
