Two men charged with an Oklahoma burglary were arrested here this week by Sheriff Floyd Peacock. George E. Flowers alias Foggy Flowers 26 and Jack Scott 35 were nabbed after Oklahoma authorities broadcast a description of the car they rode in. Oklahoma officials planned to return them to Nowata for trial.
Bas in oil concerns No 2 Elizabeth M Armstrong and others report a drillstem test in North Andrews County at Strawn in block A 34 Ellenburger and Strawn zones. Test covered 9,880 to 9,975 feet with oil flowing to surface in 40 minutes and total oil produced 74.52 barrels, no water detected, gas oil ratio about 1230 to 1, pressures 1775 to 2925 pounds.
Andrews Mustangs lost 37 to 55 as two regulars Rand y Pendleton and Carl Hollowell sat out due to injuries and illness. Sudan center Hill scored 26 while Ragsdale 12 Nichols 9 Fowler 8 Parker 2 led the visitors. Mustangs meet Stanton at 10 30 AM with a possible next game vs Alpine or Kermit Saturday at 9 30 AM.
Stamford High School reached a two year home and home contract with the Andrews Mustangs. The Mustangs will meet Stamford on September 16 at Stamford and return the game here the next year. The 1955 schedule also lists Big Spring Lake View Crane Monahans Pecos Aspire Brownfield Seminole Kermit as opponents with several conference games noted.
Final funeral rites for Mrs. Alice Lea Appleton 65 wife of G V Appleton operator at the Fullerton Magnolia Pipe Line Station will be held Sunday at the Church of Christ in Dale Texas. Death from natural causes possibly a heart attack occurred after she was found in bed by her husband Wednesday. Survivors include six daughters several sons and two sisters with the body taken to Dale by Singleton's Funeral Home.
Thieves who stole $150 in checks had swiped cash also. A beer can thrown into the station yard returned the missing $150 in checks to the elderly operator as he locked up Wednesday night, following an earlier report to police.
Frank Crown takes over as pastor of the Presbyterian church, starting last Sunday with eleven o'clock services. The congregation meets in the junior high auditorium while awaiting a permanent home, and Crown relocates with his family from Crystal City to Andrews. He brings five years pastoring Crystal City, education from Kingsville College, Austin Seminary, and UT. Mrs Crown, daughter of N R Hawkins, is a Sherman Austin College graduate. Both hold teaching certificates with four years classroom experience. Crown led Cub Scouting, helped found a summer youth program, and served as ministerial association president. The church has grown, with a new education building and fellowship hall built during his tenure. The Crown family will reside at 904 Northwest Fifth. All are urged to attend Sunday services.
A belligerent attitude and drunkenness led Andrew William Prater and his nephew Lester Elliott Coleman to jail brawl. Prater faced drunkenness resisting arrest and abusive language charges. Coleman was fined for drunkenness. In the melee, Coleman needed stitches, another inmate was treated for cuts, and fines totaled 83.50 for Prater and 24.50 for Coleman.
City records show 1954 permits totaling 2 635 934 dollars, a tripling of 1953’s value. 242 new homes plus 19 moves raised Andrews’ yearly net to 261. average new-home cost rose to 6052.52 dollars as public, church and commercial permits shaped the year.
Odessa attorney John Watts spoke at the Andrews Lions Club noon luncheon defending damage suits as a fundamental right. He attacked Texas manufacturers, insurers, railroads, oil companies, and corporate lobbies for excessive jury damages and claimed lobbies sought to remove trial by jury in compensation cases.
English Abilene Texas representative outlined National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis work to Andrews County workers at the courthouse meeting. The drive aims to raise a $5 000 quota with Mrs S P Echols heading the Mothers March and Merchandise committee.
Five county officials began new four year terms after a constitutional amendment approved by Texas voters. Milton Ramsey and four others took oaths for four year posts while three others began two year terms. A new county purchasing plan starts January 1 requiring purchase orders and signed approvals to cut waste.
The Shafter Lumber and Supply company will formally open its new store and lumber yard in the 300 Block North Main this Saturday. Manager J R Bill says favors will be given to visitors and the move broadens housing support for Andrews. The firm previously operated west of the Andrews Telephone Company and invites all to visit.
Local cage fans will have a chance to watch the 7th 8th and 9th grade teams play twice in the coming week. Today at five o clock all three teams meet Big Spring. Monday at four o clock they face Denver City here. Thursday the Colts and 8th graders meet Crockett Junior High in Odessa.
The high school choir and the Mustang pep band join the second annual Chamber of Commerce banquet on January 14. Professor Raymond P. Elliott will deliver the keynote address. The choir directs Martha June Morehart will lead several numbers and the pep band will perform during the meal.
Rev and Mrs Lowell Bell of Elma Alabama will be the special speakers at the Church of the Nazarene Sunday morning and evening January 9. Services will be held at the American Legion Hall and the public is invited to attend.
Funeral services for Robert Diptie the father of Mrs J PD Chambers of this city were conducted Tuesday at Marion Illinois Mrs Chambers was called Saturday to his bedside but he had passed away before she arrived.
