Coffee at City Hall 3 p.m. Monday welcomes the new Andrews police chief Frank Russell. City manager Len Wilson invites all residents to meet Russell who comes from Abernathy to assume the post. The item also notes a Midland Bank ad interpreting a new energy act and its oil price provisions.
Police said New Year brought calm traffic in Andrews with a few mishaps. A 1975 Ford driven by Jujuan Hallum collided at Kent Station on Wain Street causing about 100 dollars in damage. Marsha Jones’s 1971 Ford sustained minor damage at Main Street. Juan Gomez’s 1966 Chevrolet and Bobby Bryan’s 1976 Chevrolet crashed at Main and Broadway. A 1973 Ford pickup driven by Douglas Wright overturned on West Mustang Drive with about 250 dollars in damage. Wright cited for failure to control speed.
The Andrews Senior Citizens Center will open Monday under supervisor Sue Craig. The facility near the county airport on Big Spring highway houses activities for seniors and will expand based on demand. Center coordinator Craig leads a board including Mayor Louis Miller and others. a ribbon cutting is planned January 29.
The Andrews Mustangs defeated Kermit Yellowjackets 75 to 67 at Yellowjacket Fieldhouse to open the district 3A schedule. Dimmy Beck led with 22 points while Tony Batley and Tim Culp added 10 each. Joe Thompson, Wes Bownds, Jack Wilson, and Pim Allen contributed others as Wilson fouled out late.
The Midland Odessa Symphony will present the Bicentennial Pops Concert at the Old High School Auditorium at 8 pm on January 2. Conductor Dr Thomas Hobhstadt leads the orchestra with Merle David the fiddler, Andrews High School A Capella Choir and Andrews High School Band. The program lists Amelia the Beautiful and Mississippi Sawyer among others. Tickets cost 3 for adults and 1 for students.
City officials unveiled a new Felpin vacuum street sweeper in bright yellow, costing 30000 dollars and operated by Joel Locke and Len Wilson. The machine, capable of over seven cubic yards pickup, will tackle litter, dirt, rocks, cans, bottles, boards, and other debris while dampening dust for cleaner streets.
July reports a fatal accident when a gun discharged fatally in Andrews. A high speed chase ends near Andrews on the Odessa highway, arresting Johnnie Lee Henry.
