Local residents in Andrews have long debated University of Texas land ownership. A Texas senator urges publication notices for a March 11 Regents hearing to discuss leasing and possible sales of university lands in Andrews County and the leasing terms.
The Andrews city council tentatively approved a comprehensive zoning ordinance and set March 25 for a public hearing. The planing and zoning commission and City Manager Herb Sitz backed the measure to preserve property values and guide development.
Seven defendants pleaded guilty in 109th District Court before Judge Russell D. Austin. Total sentences amount to 24 years with sentences ranging from probation to prison terms for burglary and related theft offenses. District Attorney Don Nugent prosecuted. Dan Sullivan served as defense counsel.
Senator Blanchard informs Regent Erwin of Andrews County residents unhappy with University of Texas grazing lease policies. Land and Investment Committee will hear complaints at a 4:00 PM March 11 1965 in the Regent's Room Main Building UT. The letter urges residents to present their concerns and emphasizes accountability.
Four varieties of cookies are offered at 50 cents a box in a drive by Junior Cadette and Senior Scouts to raise funds for camping facilities. Proceeds support Permian Basin camps and a trip for 16 seniors to the National Roundup in Idaho. Mrs. M. J. Williams leads the sale with booths downtown and house to house outreach.
Funeral services for Mary P Cannon 87 will be held at 4 30 p m today at Singleton's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev Carl Grissom will officiate. Interment in Andrews Cemetery. She died 4 10 p m Saturday at Andrews Hospital after a three month illness. A resident of Andrews 15 years she lived at 401 NE Ave A born Oct 11 1878 in Alabama. Survived by daughter Ottie Holman three grandchildren two sisters and six great grandchildren.
With the filing deadline three days away five candidates filed for three school trustee seats for the April 2 election. Jimmy Wilkins seeks re election to place three. S P Echols, former member, challenges him. Wayne Parker seeks re election to place five against Bill Rowlett. Ellison Tom Jr. seeks re election to place four unopposed. Absentee ballots run March 15 to 30 for school election. city race absentee voting March 17 to April 2.
Thirteen Andrews speech students advanced to the finals at the Sonora Speech and Debate Tournament held Saturday. Four of five local teams qualified, with finalists including Susan Cure and Alice Greaves, Patsy Brewer and Martha Don Carlos, Bill Austin and David Hendrick, and Ronnie Ragsdale and Ricky Laminack. Other finals spots were earned in impromptu speaking dramatic interpretation Bible reading girls extemporaneous speaking humorous declamation junior declamation and girls persuasive speaking.
The nine member board screens and flags advertising solicitations as questionable, with about $100000 kept in the local economy over five years. Merchants may see a decal if a solicitation is approved, and board decisions are advisory, not binding.
The Andrews County Republican party will hold its regular monthly meeting Monday at 7 30 p m in the Green Room of the First National Bank. Guest speaker will be Buddy Hedges of Olton district Republican representative. County chairman Jack Cook invites the public to attend.
Funeral services for Walter Wesley Butler nine year old exposure victim and son of Mr and Mrs L M Clark of 403 NW 13th are set at 2 p m today at Singleton s Funeral Home Chapel with First Baptist Church officiating Interment will follow in Andrews Cemetery under direction of Singleton s The boy was found dead in a mesquite clump 20 miles southwest of Andrews late Wednesday afternoon Cause of death was exposure Justice of the Peace Owen Doggett ruled He had been missing from Otto s Boys Ranch near Notrees since Monday and was a resident there His disappearance followed taunting at the ranch and authorities feared he was trying to reach Andrews A cold front and freezing temperatures intensified concerns The boy was found by an Odessa oilfield worker at 4 45 p m Tuesday Time of death was set at 4 45 p m Tuesday The child was born July 5 1955 See RITES Page 6
More than 150 volunteers will march the 1965 Heart Fund drive in Andrews from 1 to 5 p m to fund treatment and research for heart attacks strokes rheumatic fever and other heart disorders. Volunteers will hand out pamphlets and leave envelopes for at home residents to mail to the county Heart Association.
Andrews Boys' Club Inc. will hold a board meeting at 2 p.m. Monday at the club to organize committees, according to president Charlie Bishop.
