The twelfth annual junior invitational golf tournament will feature about 36 teams in two divisions. Coach Dub Warden, tournament director, said the meet begins Friday morning with Division I for 4A schools and Division II for AAA and AA schools.
Morgan and others file for re-election to school board and city posts with deadlines set for March 4 and March 7. Clarence Parker, Jack Cassingham, Hunter Hawkins, Louis Miller, and others seek places on the city council. District events list defending champions and upcoming tournaments across Texas venues with dates and participating schools.
The Andrews Independent School Board votes four to three to use available funds for a high school expansion including a workout room four classrooms and ten tennis dressing rooms. S. P. Echols breaks a 3-3 tie supporting the plan with others citing immediate academic and athletic needs.
A half inch rain caused a street collapse at the SW Ave. A and Sth intersection where new pipeline work is ongoing. Mrs. Co L Trout and Johnny Bermen both fell into the crater as police redirected traffic until repairs could be made. Rain totaled about 0.5 inch at the county airport.
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a finance package for the Permian Basin Railroad and granted permission to build the 78 mile short line in segments. Initial funds of 2.6 million will back stock issuance and early construction between Seagraves and Wordswell Draw with plans to connect Odessa and Seminole to Santa Fe and T P in Odessa.
City councilmen held a called session to study possible changes in the salary schedule for the coming year. Len Wilson, city manager, presented recommended changes and the group plans several sessions before finalizing the budget for the next year.
County commissioners in a special session approved a plan from the Andrews Historical Society to place a plaque honoring R. M. Bob Means after the state historical committee flagged county eligibility for a pioneer marker. A separate session authorized bidding to lower water line 8 and 14 at the county airport, with bids due March 9 and plans at the engineer’s office. Hoermann named to veterans land board for Andrews County.
Freshmen and sophomores reached finals in 22 events at the Sonora Invitational last weekend while juniors and seniors stayed in Andrews for prom prep. The group from 17 schools earned three medals, including a second place in senior poetry reading by Stephanie Snelson.
Tracksters prepare to open the season at the Comanche Relays in Fort Stockton where defending district champions compete. Andrews headlines the field after winning last year's AAA relay. recent Seminole dual meet results show multiple event wins including a 2 05.8 880 clocking and several podium finishes.
Kenneth Sutton was named chairman of Andrews Local Charities at a Wednesday meeting. Roy Bennett became vice chairman with Ed Balkum secretary and F W Noble treasurer. A $250 United Fund check was noted and $750 more in quarterly UF payments were approved. Bob Henderson joined the board this year. Betty Mahan spoke on welfare budget cuts. others attending included Rev. Odell Moore and several members.
