A letter from Mrs. J. M. Dement reflects on spring and optimism while noting a road bond election delay. Commissioners court resend petitions and order March 27 vote. Steck and Company admits fault, and the required election mirrors the prior one, delaying needed road work but proceeding to print supplies if detected earlier.
The Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch drive in 15 counties passes 85 000 with momentum and aims to top 100 000 by week end led by Big Spring at 20 105 while Sweetwater climbs to 5 985 and Colorado City opens at 3 189. Kermit leads Field A with 10 720 as campaign focuses on converting conditional pledges to real gifts and filling gaps on the scoreboards.
In Andrews County North Central the Shafter Lake oil region reports new wildcat activity and extended drilling progress. Gulf Oil No 1 State School Board tests at 9 500 feet from east half section 14 block A 36 Psl survey nine miles north of Andrews. Skelly Oil No 1-D Texas University drills to 10 000 feet testing Devonian with plans for dual completion. Frank and George Frankel No 10 University flows from Wolfcamp and Devonian after acid treatment, producing up to 60 barrels per hour and 21 barrels per hour in later tests. Gulf No 1-QQ University offsets show Devonian flow with 155 barrels of fluid in 21 hours and 38 5 gravity. Stanolind No 1-AJ University tests Devonian with gas and oil flow. deepening planned. The Commissioners Court approved a tree planting project on the highway approaches to Andrews. A committee from the Lions Club Andrews Study Club and Andrews Home Demonstration Club met the court and arranged with State Highway Department officials to stake out planting sites. The county will furnish trees and labor. the highway department will maintain them after planting. Committees listed include Virgil Lasater Jake Roach Guy McGill and several club members.
The Andrews School in Andrews Texas reports a $150 donation to a German elementary school. Principal J Lee Elementary announces the effort and invites recipients to specify the country and type of institution for future gifts. The letter, signed by Milton L Smith, promotes international relief through student generosity.
Rev Loyd Mayhew announced the Means Memorial Methodist Church has installed a 940 pound bell and pecan pews. The church seats 250 and bell rings Sundays at 9 30 am and 6 pm and 7 pm on Wednesdays for prayer. An organ is being tested for Easter with a decision pending.
Claude Neely was appointed vice president of the First State Bank of Andrews at a stockholders meeting which reduced directors from seven to six. Charles Haven became cashier. Neely hails from Seagraves and Lovington after long banking tenure.
The Governor's Highway Safety Conference and Texas Safety Association will hold joint sessions in Dallas on March 19 20. Gov Beauford Jester to speak Friday morning after A F Allen Texas Safety Association report. Nine annual conference with awards for 1947 Texas industrial safety contest and safety legislation recognition.
More than 80 per cent of the city taxes for 1947 have been collected. City tax collector G. Weatherby announced on Wednesday. Total to be collected was $17,754.21. Amount collected up to January 31 was $14,207.20, leaving a balance of $3,441.01.
An Andrews woman and three men were charged with liquor law violations this past week. A Liquor Control Board agent purchased whiskey from the woman and two of the men. One man faced charges for transporting liquor in dry territory.
Andrews Chapter of the Red Cross aided four needy families during February for a total amount of $47.50. Mrs. Helen Anderson, Andrews Red Cross worker, announced Monday. The four families were widows with children affected by desertion of the husband and their names are withheld to protect privacy.
The $950000 road bond vote last Saturday was declared void due to missing voting supplies at two boxes Fullerton and Mabee. A new election set for March 27 with only two of four road proposals approved and supplies shortage blamed on Stock Printing Company of Austin.
The Andrews Chapter planning board met with Leah Jackson West Texas general representative to outline a county drive of 1550 dollars. Attending were Roy Bennett chairwoman Helen Anderson Knox Irwin Jimmie Ulmer and M L McCoy. A kickoff breakfast for workers is set for March 5 at 7 30 at Muse Cafe with a goal to complete the drive in one day and contact every home in the county.
Kermit hosts a banquet honoring 11 all district TA football selections chosen by coaches. Coach Tubb and Andrews High School are represented by Jack Young Ferrer Nix on and Bob Wright. J. W. Jones awards gold footballs. Enders Bennie Rogers and Richard Stanfield. tackles Bob Ethridge Ferrell Nixon. guards Bobby Horner Bob Wright. center Bill Neel. backs Carl Griffin Gene Streety Val Joe Walker and Jack Young.

Seventeen year old Joe Dillard of Andrews Troop 56 received the Eagle Scout award at a District 3 court of honor in Odessa Monday night. District Chairman O D Albright presented the award then pinned the badge on Dillard's father. Also honored were Life Scout Tommy Orr Troop 72 and Star recipients Kenneth Breggren Troop 78 Bob Erwin Edward Harvill and Howard Williams Troop 150. The sheriff's department worked to locate three teenage girls who ran away from home last Saturday. Two were found in Snyder, and the third returned home voluntarily from Odessa.
The Wallace Theatre hosts the final amateur show Monday night at 8 30 with four contestants John Stacymilt on Bob Wright Shirley Ham and Louise MacQuarters competing for the big prize. All expenses to Levelland covered and the program will be broadcast from the Rose Thea over station KSEL Lubbock.
A Thursday night meeting at First Baptist church aims to emphasize Sunday school work. All church general officers and Sunday school officers and teachers are urged to attend. Rev Eugene Brand announced the plan with Rev T L Denton and Rev Earl Allison among attendees. George McClellan, Association President, will also be present.
The Andrews Mustang Basketball team was edged by Kermit by one point in the district playoff at Odessa. Seminole later routed the Mustangs 31 to 28, dropping them from the district race. McCamey clinched the district title by a one point win on final Saturday night.
Coach Tubb reports 23 boys have been issued track uniforms and are training for the Mustang track team. Charles Pinnell, once a West Texas standout, now wears the red and white for Texas Tech. Veterans Jack Young and Ferrell Nixon lead the squad in events, with Young an all round track man and Nixon a shot and discus thrower.
