Presidential candidates hitchhike through town and vanish

A humorous report recalls a presidential candidate and his companion being picked up by a citizen near Andrews while campaigning. They gave talks in a cafe and service station, but locals saw no campaign activity and police later tracked them toward Big Spring. Leap Year Concert By High School Orchestra

The high school orchestra with guest artists from area towns will perform a Leap Year Concert on Thursday February 29 at 8 p.m. in the high school Little Theatre. Odessa Midland Symphony members will assist led by Jess Barrera with Gloria Steelman Hobbs Sareta Cameron Kermit on violins. Local helpers include Joyce Nix Glenda Houston and Judy Hardin. Selections include Strauss Waltzes La Folia Corelli Gluck Mozart My Fair Lady Elgar Pomp and Circumstance and the Prelude from La Traviata.

Cessna 182 Totals In Pasture Forced Landing Near Ellison Tow

A Cessna 182 owned by Pat Ballew of Seminole was totaled in a forced landing in a pasture near the Ellison Tow ranch house late Wednesday afternoon. Pilot Pappy Hoffman of Seminole and passengers James Farmer of Seminole and Neely Wright of Odessa escaped injury as the plane hit a ditch and flipped upside down, then was removed by a flatbed truck and found to be extensively damaged.

Barstow B Meets Sands A in Tuesday Playoff

Barstow B, winner of 72B, faces Sands High of 71B in a bi district playoff at Mustang gym Tuesday night at 8. Sands coached by Arlen White holds an 18 5 season record 9 0 in district while Barstow led by Pete Salgado sits at 18 6 overall 6 0 in district for a clash noted as four years since Barstow last beat Sands in playoffs.

New Sports Award Given at Barbecue

The sports committee of the Chamber of Commerce awarded an outstanding sport certificate to Track Coach Moody Conner for January. The ceremony at a barbecue for visiting golfers from about 20 West Texas schools also honored Freddy Smith of Coronado High, Lubbock, for sportsmanship. Coronado placed third last year behind Tascosa Amarillo and Permian.

Boys Club Cage Team Competes in Dallas Tourney

Andrews under 17 basketball club travelled to Dallas for a multi state tournament with five state teams. They beat Oklahoma City 61 to 48 in opener and planned a Saturday 10 am quarterfinal with finals at 2 pm if victorious. The trip was funded by local businessmen and a donated flight aided four players for the Junior-Senior Prom.

Regional Head To Speak Here At Teachers Association Meeting

City and School Eye Water City Water Contract Meeting

City council and school board set March 5 for a joint session to discuss the water contract expiring early 1969. Crash Victims Services Held for Ray Pruitt

Funeral services were held for Ray Allen Pruitt 34 Route 1 Odessa who died in a Monday head on crash with a trailer truck near Hobbs. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his parents five brothers and five sisters.

Youths Injured In Wreck At NW 9th and Ave D

Five Andrewsons were injured Wednesday when a Pan American pickup driven by Nolberto L. Martinez collided with a 196 station wagon driven by Danny Way. Way and several passengers sustained injuries. Martinez was hospitalized with a left shoulder injury. A second wreck around 3 a.m. Friday injured Ronnie Sisco and others. Page 10 SEE WRECK.
