A local column notes burglars stole $11,000 in checks from Piggly Wiggly and Andrews residents recovered the loss by reissuing checks. Letters praise Andrews schools and Superintendent Roach for strong programs and community backing.
Andrews Mustang track team scored five victories in a dual practice meet at Odessa on Wednesday. Jimmy Dorland won both the 100 and 220 yard dashes, and the 440 relay team of Perkins Waits Dorland Silvy also secured a first. Waits won the broad jump, Hale the pole vault, with others placing in sprint and field events. The Mustangs host Denver City and O'Donnell in a tri county practice meet today.
A local high school orchestra named the Stardusters captured first prize of 15 dollars at the annual Lions Club amateur show on Monday night. The group, with members Joe Thames Richard Tucker Walter Winters Roland Flores James Ulmer Don Collins Kenneth Stephens and Doyle Parker, performed two swing numbers and earned the top award. Second prize went to Janet Whitcomb last year’s winner who performed on the organ. A trio Mary Guillet Joyce Linville and Janette Hardin took third with their song.
March 12 final plans are set for a large boy scout circus by Winkler Ward and Andrews counties with trips to Monahans March 10 Kermit March 11 and final here. Jim Trott chairs the committee with Bob Dillard Sr ringmaster and a full crew of organizers. The program includes cub and boy scout races No 1 aid demonstration pyramid building camping contests and other scout skill demonstrations.
Daniel 88 father of Rev Newton S Daniel pastor of the Methodist church died here Wednesday night. Born in Alabama Oct 26 1886 he moved to Texas as a boy settling in Waco later Plainview for 45 years where he served as city judge. Services Friday at 3 pm in First Methodist Plainview. Survived by wife three sons R R Daniel Olton Frank Daniel Hereford Newton Daniel Andrews and three daughters Mrs L L Clark Floydada Mrs Cy Allen Bakersfield CA and Mrs A Williams Long Beach CA, 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A city wide revival starts March 7 at South Side Baptist Church with Pastor John F Parker announcing the schedule through March 13. Evangelist Rev. Omer Ritchie from Waco will preach and Rev. J Marion Hull of Midland will lead the song service. prayer begins at 7:15 p.m.
Former chamber of commerce manager Frank Elkins has filed as a mayoral candidate for the April election. Mayor Virgil Lasater is not seeking re election. Aldermen Dennis Nix and Bill Sanders also run for re election with terms expiring this year. March 5 is the filing deadline.
Several oil discoveries are recorded in Northeast and Northwest Andrews County. No. 1-BB State, No. 7-P B Midland Farms, and Stanoland No. 6-P-B Midland Farms wells report extended field activity in Midland Farms area and Means region, with bottom depths around 12 675 to 12 900 feet and initial yields near 486.98 barrels daily, along with perforations and fracturing details.
Texas Department of Public Safety radar unit stopped 30 speeders on a Saturday night along the Odessa highway. Over two patrols, 37 drivers were halted last week, with six fined and the others warned. The latest check used nine troopers, issuing tickets to all 30 at an average fine of $20 in Justice of the Peace O G Weatherby’s court.
William A. Hutcheson of Midland is named a director of the First State Bank by executive vice-president J. O. Boothe. He becomes the second new director after Max Ramsry, with stock transfers from Bob Martin Sr. and allocations to Carl Betenbough, Robert Barnes, and John E. Smith. Hutcheson joins existing directors Jackson Parker, Carl Underwood, Guy McGill, J. O. Boothe, and Bob Martin Jr.
Dan Smoots moderated the noon meeting as a film on whether Franklin D. Roosevelt invited or knew beforehand of the Pearl Harbor attack was shown. Charles Dean, program chairman, introduced the program.
The Bryan and Oklahoma City based Caudill Rowlett Scott and Associates were contracted to work with the board and staff on planning facilities for the rapidly growing school system. Supt T A Roach says administrators teachers and support staff will study needs for overcrowded elementary schools and the firm will review proposed designs. The board also accepted Carl Ham’s resignation as member and elected James A Ulmer to fill the unexpired term.
A spring style show will be held in the high school auditorium on March 10 under Delta Beta sorority sponsorship to raise funds for an eye operation for a local elementary student. Six local firms will model ten garments apiece with Mrs. Jackie Young as commentator and Jerry Carnes at the organ.
Investigation continues as officers seek two or more youths who broke into the Junior High building last Thursday night causing about 800 in damage to walls fixtures books and furniture. Window screen cut entry. gas jets left on filling the building with fumes. Fingerprints are being evaluated and several suspects questioned as police work to solve related petty thefts of gasoline.
Truman Nix, manager of Andrews Nursery, announced the purchase of Mac's Flower firm this week. Nix and his wife will run the floral firm with their nursery, under the name Andrews Floral and Nursery.
Funeral services for David Ira Carruth age 52 were held at Calvary Baptist Church at 3 00 p m Thursday. Rev Tom Flippin officiated. Carruth died at home early Wednesday from a heart attack after ill health. He resided in Andrews six years and worked in oil field. Interment in Andrews County Cemetery directed by Singleton's Funeral Home. Survivors include wife Carrie one daughter Lillie Mae four sons J F F B Andrews A M Seminole and J L Midland mother Mrs Mary Carruth of Seminole sister Mrs Adele Deathridge of Lamesa and six brothers W C Andrews J M B V Seminole R L Lamesa O O Snyder and J R Hobbs New Mexico.
