The 23rd annual Andrews County Livestock Show drew record entries over two days in the new County Exhibit Building. 160 animals were shown with 85 participants from 4-H and FFA, flagging strong grand and reserve champions across steers lambs and swine, while a separate pottery glazing demonstration by Stan Jacobs drew attendees at the Vocational Education Building.
Denisa Rehders daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Rehders and Rocky Murdock son of Mr and Mrs Darwin Murdock were named this year's prom couple at the 1977 Junior-Senior Prom. The Wizard of Oz theme featured First Crossing of Fort Worth as entertainment. Over 300 attended the banquet and festivities, the largest turnout noted by student activities director Mike Fenner.
The third annual Rotary Club Gun and Coin Show comes to Andrews Civic Center on Big Spring highway this weekend. Doors open 8:30 a m Saturday to 9 p m and 8:30 a m to 6 p m Sunday. Exhibitors from across the country include Charles Sawyer of Blackwell and Burt Sinclair of Kermit with 10 display tables and 50 cent admission.
At presstime the thermometer read 83 with 56 at night and winds from the northwest 25 to 30 mph gusting to 43. Dust and sand filled the day as local firemen battled several grass fires south of town near the county line on the Odessa highway. Winds were forecast to continue for the next few days.
A 38 yearold local man Alonzo Harold Stubbs Jr is jailed in Sterling County on counts of homicide with a motor vehicle and failure to stop and render aid. Bond set at 15000 on each count totaling 30000. The fatal crash occurred around 3 am Saturday eight miles north of Sterling City on U S Highway 87 killing Airman Darline Bemis 19 of Webb Air Force Base. Airman Phillip McElreath 19 also stationed at Webb AFB was listed in serious condition with a broken pelvis. A Sterling City patrolman identified Stubbs as the auto driver. the car reportedly fled the scene before being stopped on U S 87.
A Midland federal grand jury investigates Whalen Lake pollution and migratory bird deaths. Several oil firms dumped salt water there with a nearby treatment plant. witnesses will be heard March 8 as authorities consider stopping the dumping. Local rancher W. D. McWhorter recalls no birds or dead wildlife near the lake.
