Andrews Burk Leads Mustangs at Comanche Relays Fort Stockton

Billy Burk finished fourth in the Comanche Relays at Fort Stockton with a 51149 inch put. He also aimed for the discus final. Finalists included Jack Keen in the mile Joe Luna in pole vault and the mile relay squad of Cooney Conner Tidwell and Mooreman. The sprint relay team of Cooney Lindsey Conner and Amilton placed ninth in their heat but failed to reach finals.

Local Artists Holding Show Tuesday Night

An Andrews public art exhibit, sponsored by the American Association of University Women, will be held Tuesday at 7 p m at the First National Bank. Paintings judged by Richard Sessler of Odessa College compete for first to third in five categories with honorable mentions. Deadline was noon Saturday. Art ranges from still life to landscapes in various media. Youth entries go to the Junior Division, others to the Senior Division.

Two deep wildcat wells are staked in Andrews County. Socony Mobil Oil tests a 12,850 foot Ellenburger well No 10 Cowden near Kermit. Amarillo Oil pilots an 8,800 foot Fusselman test No 1 W F Scarborough Estate near Andrews. Pan American drills 11,300 foot Devonian Wolfcamp test No 1-DW University, and David Inez Fasken of Midland plans Ellenburger work on No 20 Falken Fee 14 miles east. The Embar field posts a Yates sand gas well at No 129 University with 481 000 cubic feet per day.

National science plan shifts biology teaching nationwide

Cattle Testing Starts Wednesday in Andrews County

Cattle testing for tuberculosis and brucellosis begins Wednesday in Andrews County. Free testing for milk cows and other cattle is offered by the County Agent. About five percent of range cattle must be tested for recertification as a disease free area, enabling unrestricted movement across the United States without blood tests for three years starting December 1963.

Morgan Elected CGA President

Lloyd Morgan was elected president of the West Texas Cattle Growers Association for the coming year. Officers elected include Bill Wyche as vice president Pete Millican as secretary and Lilison Tom Jr as treasurer. Duane Ratliff and Gene Irwin were named two year directors with Ellison Tom Lloyd Morgan and Gordon Cox as outgoing directors. Dr J W Dollahue of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station spoke on feed to control shinnery poisoning with results expected to hit the market early spring. The group pledged $50 to the Andrews Industrial Research League with local cattle producers contributing one cent per head and any excess funds also going to the League.

Contests Slated For Local Spellers In Andrews County

Andrews County will hold local spelling elimination contests Tuesday to select top ten seventh and eighth graders to advance to the March 5 rounds. The county champion and runner-up will compete March 26 for a regional spot in Lubbock on April 6, with the Lubbock Avalanche Journal sponsoring. Lana Burkett previously won in 1961 and earned a trip to Washington D C.

Houston Pastor Currie to Lead Week of Sermons in Houston

Dr. Thomas W. Currie Jr. pastor of St. Paul Presbyterian Church Houston will conduct a week long series at Andrews Presbyterian Church from Monday through Sunday with 7 30 p m sermons and 10 a m daily Bible study Tuesday through Sunday. He holds multiple degrees and has pastored churches in Eliasville Fort Worth Dallas and organized Ridglea and St Paul Churches. He chairs a Presbyterian television radio panel and is Synod moderator nominating for May election. He is married with five children and is son of the late Dr. Currie Sr.
