Obituary style tribute to Frank Clarke highlighting his community ties in Andrews and his impact on local business readers. Officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety announced a schedule change for driver license tests. Beginning March 65th tests will be offered every Monday at 9 am in the Courthouse, with exams held on the first and fifth Mondays previously. McLaren, examiner, noted the high number of applicants prompting the weekly tests.
Rotarians heard a briefing on the Hour law during today's luncheon led by J. Mo le field supervisor of the Office. McAuliffe accompanied the speaker as area investigator.
About 250 students from the junior and senior high schools will perform in the annual band concert at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. The event funds the Youth Center and is sponsored by the Andrews Study Club in a Community Achievement contest.
The high school presents Mr. Angel tonight at eight in the auditorium with a second performance tomorrow. Seniors aim to raise over 800 dollars for their Galveston trip as part of the fundraiser. Cast includes Sammy Galloway as Mr Angel, Jerry Lasater Stacy Bolton, Betty Lynie Lydia Bolton, Frances Payne Little Item, and Jim Stoicheff directing.
Placid Oil Co plans a 14000 foot wildcat in southeast Andrews County Texas, 20 miles southeast of Andrews, near lines 1 and 15. Operations to start at once. Monterey Oil Co No 2 15. J D Biles and others begin a 9400 foot wildcat 12 miles northeast of Eunice in Andrews County near section 15 block A-31. Drilling on this new venture.
James F. Hyde age 32 formerly Moscow Texas Independent School superintendent will begin duties March 1 as assistant to M O Woolam business manager. He will be director of school properties and oversee building and ground personnel. Hyde holds a BA from Mexico City College and a 1952 MA from Stephen F. Austin College. His WW II service with the Seabees included South Pacific supply work. Hyde and his wife with two children will move here.
An elderly man was struck by a speeding light grey car on West Broadway near the Legion Cafe as road blocks were set up on highways out of Andrews. The victim, 55 year old Andy Hilderbrande, suffered a broken shoulder and multiple injuries. He reported the car appeared full of singing people and fled the scene. Police from multiple towns imposed road blocks but the driver eluded capture.
Plans outline observance of Texas Education Week in local schools from March 5 to March 10. Parents, school patrons, and citizens will participate. H P McLaughlin, a sixth grade teacher, chairs the classroom teachers committee handling the plans.
Dale Carnegie instructor Ed Baker spoke at the Andrews Lions Club noon luncheon detailing the four focus areas of the classes poise courage better social relations effective speaking and expanding horizons. The club may sponsor a 15 week course with Wednesday night options to be explored. Directors voted a 200 donation toward a Stephenson resuscitator for the Volunteer Fire Department following the presentation by Albert Sybesma and Charlie Burkett.
Two men from Andrews suffered injuries in a two-vehicle crash on the Lamesa highway about 7 30 Monday night. L F Bonner 47 fractured pelvis and head lacerations. Joe Gotney sustained head injuries. Bonner rode with John W Echell 33 while Cortney drove the other car. Franklin D Ray a passenger in Cortney s vehicle was unharmed.
Three burn victims at Permian General Hospital are receiving skin grafts this week. Four year old Wanda Sellers is in excellent condition and improving rapidly after backing into an open heater. Gilbert Luna, five, remains in serious condition after pulling a pan of hot water onto his chest. Refugio Hernandez, 20, suffered serious Burns backing into a fire on an oil drilling rig. Dr. Harry Tompkins is performing the graft surgeries.
Funeral services for Frank L Clarke 57 will be at Compton Funeral Home Chapel in Waco at ten this morning. Clarke died at Shannon hospital San Angelo from injuries suffered February 10 in a car truck collision near Big Lake. His wife is in critical condition at Big Lake hospital. Clarke a retired rancher from Eldorado moved to Andrews last August and opened an office in the News building. He is a grandson of former Governor Ross. Survivors include wife two sons Frank Clarke Jr of Chicago and Lt Neville Presley Clarke in Iowa two daughters Laura Middle of Port Arthur and another daughter at College Station one brother L S R Clarke of Uvalde and one sister Miss Elizabeth Clarke of Waco. Andrews residents left last night for the funeral including Mr and Mrs Max Ramsey Mrs Lillian Dean Sheriff Floyd Pescock I Z Brown and others.
Mrs. Juanita Stout aged 32 was convicted of bigamy and received a three year probationary sentence from Judge G C Olsen in district court. The case featured a six hour legal dispute over where the crime occurred and whether the ceremony or common law marriage supported the charge. Stout, a mother of two, had five marriages and pleaded guilty after defense and prosecution wrangled over jurisdiction and proof.
Several injury victims from recent accidents were released from Permian General Hospital. Thelma Carlisle, 15, Wink, head injuries from a wreck that killed a Kermit girl were discharged. Three others from the Carl S Hamwell pickup collision left the hospital, including James and Jean Wilson and Glenn Cross. Bill Baker improved after pneumonia. John Deere and Dewey Bailey also home. County Judge Milton Ramsey faced a serious setback from a leg wound blood clot and lung. Mrs Frank Clark and Mrs R R Ramsey made gradual progress with limited mobility. Dr R R Ramsey showed improvements.
The Andrews track team hosts Monahans and Lamesa for a Friday practice meet at 2 45 p m marking the spring debut for the full Mustang squad Coach Max Goldsmith returns six veterans from last year’s district regional and state thirds Donnie Benham Carl Ponca Dwight Sensabaugh and others join the track roster with a total of 26 out Donnie Benham took first in the broad jump Ponca led the mile Sensabaugh pole vaulted Perkins ran on the sprint relay Hart ran the mile relay and Nichols ran the 880 The Mustangs schedule includes Comanche Relays Fort Stockton March 3 Possum Kingdom Graham March 10 Southwestern Relays Fort Worth March 17 West Texas Relays Odessa March 23 24 Permian Relays Kermit March 29 and district at Kermit April 7 Other track members listed include Tommy Jackson Ray Ham Don Linn Bud Landon Carey Cook Larry Robertson and more.
H S Speck Whittenburg rancher east of town announces candidacy for precinct three commissioner. He operated the Hedford-Whitenburg and Bedford-Whittenburg ranches since 1946, served in the Army, and plans full-time service if elected, hoping to meet each voter before the July primary.
A progress report on the City of Andrews was presented by Mayor Herb Brown Chamber Manager Harry Cowan City Secretary L. B. Parrish and Editor James Roberts on a 30 minute program on KOSA TV. They reviewed rapid growth and outlined future plans as part of a Permian Basin city series.
