Gene toiled four years in college then left Fort Worth for a Plains town. He swapped a $137.50 week factory job and city life for a small town, diving into a natural-suited occupation with intense work and family happiness. He believes college suits some but not all bright young people.
The beautification steering committee in Andrews planned a city wide clean-up effort with a slogan contest. Entries are due March 5 at Jeanne Arnold's West Broadway real estate office. The group will appoint civic representatives to oversee sections and remove abandoned cars with police enforcement.
No candidates had filed for four city posts by Friday with a March filing deadline. Open seats include two council terms held by Bob Barber and Jim Dotson, an incomplete mayor term for Byford Sealy, and an incomplete council term after his appointment. Three filed for two school board seats. school board filing ends March 5 at 4 30 p.m.
Two women Mrs Vonnell Peek and daughter Mary of 907 NW 6th and Howard Marr of Odessa suffered minor injuries after a three car pileup on North Main in front of the courthouse Thursday. Bobby Stephens Jr of 110 NW 2nd received a citation for failure to control. Witnesses said Peek stopped for a turn, another car stopped, and a third crashed into both vehicles.
A new session of adult classes starts March 10 at Andrews High School. Adults seeking higher coursework should report at 7 p.m. Those starting the program for the first time are urged to attend, per principal Brodie Hutchinson. It marks the third set of classes toward high school diplomas.
Andrews athletes started the season with a large golf invitational at the Andrews course drawing 155 golfers from 31 high schools led by A and B teams coached by Dub Warden. In track at Fort Stockton the Andrews team qualified for most finals, led by Don Leatherwood in intermediate hurdles and a string of strong performances across events.
Rain fell twice on Friday at the Andrews invitational with morning showers totaling .23 and afternoon showers .21 amid cloudy skies. Very light hail accompanied the afternoon shower, causing confusion at the tournament underway here. This marked the second 1969 rain event in Andrews, following a January with no rainfall. Grass-fires began occurring daily but halted after the first shower this month.
The vocational department of Andrews High School offers Basic Electricity Beginning Drafting and automotive mechanics for beginners. Register Monday night at 7 p.m. in the vocational building. A minimum of 10 students per class is required to offer the courses to adults.
The Gloryland Quartet of Roswell New Mexico will join many gospel and country acts at the monthly jamboree setting at the old high school auditorium on Saturday night March 1.
West Texas lawmen battle a persistent mercury thief problem in Andrews County. Thieves steal mercury used to measure gas pressure, selling it for about five dollars a pound on the open market while officials warn of radioactive risks and felony charges that can bring up to five years in prison.
The American Cancer Society of Andrews met at 7 30 p m Monday February 17 and set April 17 for the annual drive. Mrs Savannah Belcher is campaign chairman and leads the house to house drive. Rev Norman Grigsby chairs the business drive. A March 23 open show at 3 00 p m on Breast Self Examinations was planned and featured the William Taulman film. Attendees included Mrs Gerald McCaskill Rev Norman Grigsby Glenda Daniels Dottie Ramsey Neva Brannan and Bill Whitis district director from Midland.
Kiwanis Club invites Lt. Gov. Paul Cooper of Midland Kiwanis for a special meeting at the country club. Gene Pearson presided the dinner honoring Kiwanis wives on Valentine’s Day. Mrs. W. O. Woolam presented a Vista work program.
Funeral services for lat Templeton, 68, will be at Magnolia Methodist Church at 2 30 p m Monday. Burial in Andrews Cemetery for the retired hospital worker who lived in Andrews 25 years. Officiating will be Rev. C Jones of Crane. Singleton Funeral Home is in charge. Surviving are wife Genever one son Kenneth two daughters Jo Evelyn and Mrs. Mercede Jasper one sister and three grandchildren.
