The Andrews Invitational opens Friday with a 2b team field the largest early season state meet. Dub Warden directs at Andrews Golf Course with a new nine hole addition and a substitution rule allowing up to a four player team viewing more golfers under tournament pressure. Powerful Tascosa leads a strong AAAA slate including Midland Pam pa Borger Big Spring and Odessa. The top varsity four appear to be David Porter Mike Pusey Jerry Smith and Bill Craig with a B team led by Denny Porter Joe Mike Allen Martin Barrow Ronnie Sims Fred Courtney and George Dozier. The event runs 8 a m to 36 holes Friday and 36 more Saturday.
The Andrews Flying Mustangs kick off the 1962 track season at the Comanche Relays in Fort Stockton. Coachs Max Goldsmith and Forrest Scott lead a youthful squad aiming to rebound from last year’s state title, with nine returning lettermen and Joe Cooney the lone 1961 state participant.
Faculty Follies rehearsals are in progress for a two day event next Thursday and Friday titled Around the World in 80 Minutes. Acts from all school buildings will portray a county at a historical period. Tickets cost 1.00 for adults and 50 cents for students, with proceeds funding scholarships and CTA projects. Louise Abernathy is general chair.
The community development committee renamed from Industrial Committee to broaden work toward community growth. Fred Courtney of Gulf Oil Corp. chairs with members including Gene Pearson and Jeanne Arnold. They plan to contact executives of two major county companies about new industry and expanding facilities and start an Andrews area industrial brochure.
Mild days in Andrews last week kept temperatures above 60 and often over 70. Leaves sprout on trees, bushes bloom, and grass loses its winter shade as signs of spring appear.
J L Bowers 36 released on $10 000 bail after being charged with murder in the fatal shooting of James David Frazier 41 Saturday at Bowers residence In Andrews Bowers admitted shooting Frazier five times with a .45 caliber pistol during an argument Sheriff Paul Cumbie filed the charge and noted it was the county s fourth murder in eight months Frazier worked for a local oil servicing firm and had lived in Andrews about two months Services for Frazier were held Tuesday at 2 p m at Graham after his body was moved by Singleton Funeral Home
Open house for the new Permian General Hospital is set for Sunday April 29 barring unforeseen difficulties. Contractor Fred Kasch and architect Jack Lemmon with hospital board and commissioners discussed the date and a three way open house with the new high school and city hall to attract out of town visitors. The hospital’s four million dollar project follows an extension due to severe weather in January.
All candidates for the May 5 democratic primary paid their filing fee before the Saturday deadline, according to county Democratic chairman Dr. Z W Hutcheson Jr. Forty two office seekers announced for posts from seven county positions to state senator will appear on the ballot, with a drawing expected soon for ballot placement.
Ambitious plans for a cooperative dairy near Andrews were announced by a Midland company spokesman. The plant would process raw milk for West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, with a unique cow ownership pool and a 20 percent annual return guaranteed to cow owners.
Andrews veterinarian Dr Virgil Patrick will vaccinate dogs and cats at City Hall from 9 a m. Saturday at a special 2 50 per animal price. Police Chief John Neely urged residents to vaccinate and keep animals confined or leashed to avoid fines under city ordinance 331 100 for loose animals.
A pair of winter band concerts feature about 250 students today and Friday. Tonight at 7 p.m. the junior high bands and orchestra perform at the old high school auditorium under Mrs. Montgomery and Mrs. Nix. Friday at 8 p.m. the Mighty Mustang Band performs under Mr. Epps in the new high school dome with 122 members. Admission is free tonight and 50 cents Friday.
