A Saturday 2:30 PM district court room gathering invites citizens to weigh in on presidential nomination and national policy. The speaker decries corruption, taxes, and foreign policy, urging a morally righteous, outspoken public to protest government excess and Russia policy.
An early Devonian flowing well eighteen miles from Andrews signals a virgin field with great potential. Officials fear a shortage of ideas to harness new opportunities and warn that without fresh plans nearby cities in East Texas have perished for lack of innovation.
A six pound daughter named Laura Cammille was born February 14 to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sawyer. Barbara June, a five pound 10 1 2 ounce daughter, arrived February 16 for Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Helms. A son weighing 11 pounds 1 1 4 ounces was born February 20 to Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Nelson.
The Andrews school bands stage a 7 30 p m concert in the high school auditorium with 164 students. Admission is 25 and 50 cents, proceeds supporting the American Red Cross. The 64 member Junior Band opens, followed by a 100 piece Senior Band. Soloists and a variety of numbers, a large bass drum exhibit, and a reading of The Three Little Pigs with music are included. A souvenir program features all players. post concert, the new band hall opens for inspection.
The P and B Gulf Service Station opens Saturday February 23 at Main and Elm on Highway 51 operator Lawrence Proctor announced. The modern station features latest automo bile service appliances and invites the public to inspect it. Children get lollypops and balloons and adults receive ash trays key rings and five dollars in Pacific Stamps.
The first grass roots democratic meeting opens at 2:30 PM Saturday in the district court room. J S Montgomery Andrews county democratic chairman chairs to organize for the May county convention. Max Ramsey county attorney explains the new election law and precommitteemen may be chosen. The chairman seeks public input on party line voting versus instructed or uninstructed delegation to the state convention.
Funeral services for W. H. Neil aged father of Mrs. John Harrell were conducted February 12 at the First Methodist Church in Edgewood Texas. Mr Neil died February 11 after a severe heart attack. Harrell joined his wife who had been with her father the past week for the funeral and they returned home the latter part of the week.
Junior High football jackets were awarded to seventeen boys Thursday by Coach Truman Nix. Two eighth graders, James Durbin and Gerald Pilgrim, led the list with the others including Phillip Wheeler, Chuck Carruth, Carl Hollowell, Wayne Waits, Luther Hale, Leslie Hudgeons, Jack Frazier, Max Ragsdale, Jimmy Dorland, Don Spencer, Charles Brewer, L. F. McCrary, Randy Pendleton, and manager Freddy Hollowell.
Deputy Sheriff John Suggs went to Lubbock on Monday to pick up T. C. Grimes and escort him to the Andrews County jail in exchange for a $537.00 fine for transporting liquor across dry territory.
The Andrews newspaper recounts a week of snow and wind with locals enjoying films at Lions Club and a parade of daily chores. A reader notes a 1908 Buick and a punchy scene of parallel parking while community life includes a Democratic rally, a high school band concert, and the start of a broad athletic program across schools.
The first Boy Scout finance drive report from Andrews shows $418 collected at the kickoff meeting. Judge Milton Ramsey and a six man team led in contributions with 100 percent participation from Ramsey and Hamilton teams present. Final fundraising results to be announced next Tuesday.
Funeral services for N. W Madison of Stanton were held Monday at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Stanton. He died Sunday night after a lengthy illness. Surviving are his wife a daughter Opal King of Snyder and six sons Louise Andrews Lois Tarzan Carl Big Spring Gilbert Lenorah Paul and Dick Kermit. Attending from Andrews were Rev. Everett S Martin Mr and Mrs Troy Moore and Mrs. Wanda Malone.
Andrews system officials including Supt. D Hamilton Principals M O Woolam J Lee Smith and J B Youngblood and teachers Vernon Payne Charles Choate Keith Harding Charles Compton Gordon Williams E B Maxwell and Byron Baker attended a school masters and board members meeting in Fort Stockton Monday night Board members Johnny Smith and C E Carruth were also present.
A bake sale fundraiser is announced for Saturday February 23 at Singleton's Department Store hosted by the Couples Class of the Means Memorial Methodist Church. Proceeds support church missions and community aid.
A Gulf Oil No. L NNN Texas Ellenburger test in southern Andrews County flowed 541 barrels of oil and seven barrels of basic sediment and acid water in 6 12 hours after acidizing with 500 gallons through perforations from 12 520 to 12 575 feet. The well lies two miles south of the Fuhr man Masche pool.
Andrews County commissioners set taxable values at 45 million plus for 1952 with oil company representatives present. A tentative 1952 budget proposed about 692 857 to operate county government. Industry talks noted Fullerton field declines may shift value increases to older fields and require prorated assessments.
C V Campbell county chairman reports the 1952 March of Dimes campaign raised 2635.57 dollars in the month long drive. The note thanks volunteers and local businesses including Rose Theatre cafes and drug stores for their support to polio treatment and research.
Lions Club members viewed colored films of hunting trips to British Columbia and Alberta. Bechtel, a Brownfield photographer, led a four man party on trips in 1946 and 1947 near Lake Louise. Speakers were arranged for Ladies Night on March 11 despite Izzard's absence.
