Hutchinsons host private showing of None But the Brave by the Lasater brothers Charles and Jerry of Frankel City. The amateur production, budgeted at 40000 dollars, features both brothers in major roles with Charles as the younger kid soldier and Jerry as an older figure.
Andrews Volunteer Firemen answered two alarms Tuesday afternoon. A grass fire at 1315 Terrace Circle Drive caused no damage. A 1953 Studebaker on the high school parking lot was totally damaged. owned by Jerry Gilhand.
Burk a three year letterman and tri captain signs to attend Baylor University following his older brother Robert who was co captain for the Bears last season. Burk earned All South Plains Dream Team honors and two time All District selections while playing under Glen Frazier.
The National Thespian Society presents Room Full of Roses in the Little Theatre at the high school. Performances begin at 7 p m Friday and Saturday with tickets at 1 for adults and 50 cents for students. John H Hogue directs the double cast play about a seven year old girl whose parents divorce and her quest for happiness. Senior Sharon Pilgrim plays Grace Hewitt throughout the run.
Spring sports launch with Comanche Relays at Fort Stockton led by Max Goldsmith’s Flying Mustangs. Kelton Brewer’s tennis team faces Lubbock, while golfers under Dub Warden start at Lubbock. Big Spring hosts a girls three day volleyball meet. baseball opens March 1. freshmen sprinters meet in Denver City March 7.
Andrews Chamber of Commerce Conventions Committee reports 1432 attendees in 14 events last year and plans to invite regional and state groups this year. Chairman Charlie Alcorn notes secretary help, name badges, venue help, door prizes, and speaker lists to aid local organizations in securing meetings. The group invites local suggestions for 1963 conventions.
A census survey shows 78 homes vacant in Andrews while new families moved in February. About 27 families arrived since February 1, with eight workers commuting from neighboring towns. 70 FHA homes repossessed sit idle, spurring talks with FHA on rental use. K and B Company and Western Geophysical Company workers constitute most arrivals.
Darrell Lawson was named to the 2-AAA All-District basketball team by league coaches. Senior Roger Byles and Emory Smith received honorable mention. Smith also served as a co captain for the Mustangs. First team selections include Reggie Gil breath, Buddy Luce, Frank Rice, and Randy Jackson. The 109th District Court session was postponed from Tuesday to Thursday as none of the Tuesday cases were ready. Jurors summoned for Tuesday morning must appear at 9 30 a m Thursday. The first case on the docket is Deltes Forrest Gotcher versus Houston Fire.
Andrews artists will display paintings at a public art exhibit at the First National Bank at 7 30 p m Tuesday under the sponsorship of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women. Entries must be submitted at the bank Friday or Saturday with hangings accepted Friday 2 7 p m and Saturday 9 a m to noon. Original works in five categories still life portraits landscapes seascapes watercolor or miscellaneous. Student art in Junior Division. others in Senior Division. Andrews County shows a third straight year of population decline. City population is 10,960 and rural count 1,497, totaling 12,457. Census officer Kenneth Sutton notes continued preliminary findings on scholastics and a county trend from 1960 peak of 13,674.
A score of area schools will attend a one day student science congress at the local high school. Dr. Addison E. Lee of the University of Texas will consult and judge top science papers. Richard Oxford leads the local science club with sponsors Ken Williamson Thelma Fennel and A. W. Shoffit.
A home economics class was reminded of standard service rules with the phrase Food is served from the left and drinks from the right. A student echoed the guidance in a test sentence but with minor wording changes, reflecting classroom memory.
A general meeting of all committees working on a city master plan will convene at 3 p m Friday. The general committee and six sub committees will have their roles outlined, with a Texas Tech project group aiding formulation. The plan aims for orderly development of streets schools and recreational areas while avoiding marginal neighborhoods. After a Friday assembly the sub committees will split into areas for organization.
