Local officials study extending Block 12 road south into the Dollarhide area to improve school bus routes and provide a direct link toward Carlsbad Caverns. Citizens see potential for better shopping access and a straighter path for motorists, aiding regional planning.
The annual senior class play Reserve Two For Murder has been moved from tonight and Friday to Monday and Tuesday due to rehearsal delays caused by three cast members on the basketball team. Director Willard LaGrone notes possible regional playoffs plus an all audience stage setup and ticket sales at 50 cents for students and 75 cents for adults.
Patrolmen Buff Angel and Bill Hyman pursued a 90 mph speeder for 24 miles from Odessa to Andrews. The driver forced a crash into a patrol car, then continued through town running red lights. The right rear tire was later struck, stopping the 1949 car and revealing John Grady Thomas, 29, of Andrews, charged with driving while intoxicated. He is out on a $1,500 bond.
Abilene will host the 1958 Flying Mustangs in a triangular meet with Northside Fort Worth and Abilene. Coach Max Goldsmith brings 20 returning lettermen and 14 first year men. Larry Shoemaker and Jerry Jetton will run the 100 yard dash. Shoemaker set a 440 record in junior Olympics last year. 880 yard runners are Don Linn Dave Yadon and Carey Cook. Linn Yadon return with Carey Cook replacing Don Nichols. Ray Ham leads the 440 relay while others seek a win at Abilene.
Funeral services for Joe Gris sam Faircloth 58 a Ranger police officer were held Tuesday after he died from a gunshot wound suffered Sunday. Coroner Weatherby expected to rule death by personal safety related wound. Faircloth later died at General Hospital after being found with a revolver near him in his bedroom on Northwest 13th Street. He had earlier complained of ill health and was described as a three month Andrews police veteran. Survived by wife one daughter Jodie Ann Garon of Fort Worth two brothers Sig Faircloth Eastland and Nat Faircloth Olden Texas.
A nine point list of recommendations followed a special audit of county expenditures. The grand jury urged receipts for all payments, central purchasing and warehousing, daily time sheets, competitive bidding, a new machine accounting system, an annual audit, double entry hospital accounting, and a road superintendent for county roads.
The Commissioners Court tentatively approves a Parents Club committee plan for Youth Center upgrades after weeks of study. Goals include brighter exterior lighting, larger air conditioning units, added parking, drapes for the ballroom, a new paint job, a juke box, relocating the director’s office, and a $1000 budget increase. Projections suggest most items could be completed this year, with some larger items possibly postponed.
The annual election of school trustees was ordered for Saturday, April 5. Incumbents J. A Roach Humble and John Pike musters terms, with Roach not seeking re election. Candidates must file by midnight March 5 under a new law. Carruth presides, Smith is vice president, Lasater secretary. other members include Clyde Broam and Dr Z W Hutcheson Jr.
The county disaster unit and local government agencies discussed roles in disaster relief and protection of life health and property. Ground Observer Corps reps pledged aid and communications plans were reviewed with emphasis on tornado protection and public education. Frank Stickney was named disaster chairman replacing Pete Millican. subcommittee chairs include T A Roach and Dr Z W Oce.
More than 50 local business people attended a Chamber of Commerce meeting in the Junior High Cafeteria to hear Charles Signor of Lubbock National Bank discuss planned public relations. He urged humane, consistent PR and outlined 12 steps including top management support and centralized control.
