Contributions can be given to McDaniel at Wackers or to Mrs. James Foster in the county judge's office. Chairmen oversee telephones food drinks roving decor and door prize duties.
An 18 year old, Kirk Guthrie, sustained knee injuries when his car rear ended Leonard Rapp at a West Broadway NW 2nd light. Guthrie was cited for following too closely.
Kenneth Collett, 35, of Andrews was in satisfactory condition at Medical Center Hospital Odessa after a one car crash five miles west of Goldsmith at Turnbow Corners. He failed to negotiate a turn on Scharbauer Road and the 1960 station wagon he drove struck a cattle guard, flipped end over end, and rested on its top.
The eight top spellers from seventh and eighth grades were selected for the annual spelling bee at the Downtown Lions Club on March 3. Forest Scott announced the Feb. 17 selections, including three eighth graders Jonnie Gilliam Tomi Sue Garrett Gloria Peterson and five seventh graders Cynthia Wilson Elynn Campbell Danny Ivy Kathy McMullin Donna McKee.
Nine Andrews coaches attended the regional mid winter meeting in El Paso. Attendees listed include Jimmy Keeling Edd Farmer Jim Sutter Hollis Gainey James Ketcham Frank Rice Don Leach Mike Peebles and Gordon O Dell. Some coaches stayed for practice meets in golf track and tennis. The event is part of a recurring winter regional gathering with a statewide meeting in August each year.
The first show of the Texas New Mexico Cutting Horse Association will be at 2 30 p m Sunday in Cave Dunn Arena in southeast Andrews near Dunn Stables. Entry fees are 12 dollars for novice 17 dollars for the 500 1000 class and 20 dollars for the open class.
Two aqua golf carts numbered 6 and 5 were stolen from the Andrews Golf Course Saturday night. Local pro S A Smith asks anyone with information to notify the Andrews County Golf Shop or the sheriff.
The Andrews Kiwanis held its annual awards dinner at the Andrews Country Club with Odessa attorney Phil Hardburger as keynote. He recalled the American Capitol history and Peace Corps projects, noting Andrews Junior High’s participation, and Dan Sullivan introduced the speaker.
The Andrews Mustangs beat the Kermit Yellowjackets 66 to 57 to close the season, finishing fourth with six losses. Rodney Lunceford and Carl Akron led with 21 points apiece, Mark Pearson added 19 for Andrews, while Dan Dampeer scored for Kermit. Fort Stockton secured the undefeated district title, followed by Seminole.
A 16 year old youth who missed school Tuesday morning and had daily medication disappeared prompting a wide search. A plane piloted by Short Pipkin and loaned by Bridges located the boy five minutes after takeoff walking in a field behind Andrews Packing. Gene Stansberry reached him first and the family thanked all helpers.
Three candidates filed by Tuesday for school board and city council. Dan Sullivan seeks re election to Place 2 on the school board with Lloyd Morgan as Place 1 incumbent. Filing closes March 4 with Lowell McGee in the school administration building. In the city council Clarence Parker seeks re election to Place 4 for a two year unexpired term and Jack Cassingham files for Place 5 a three year post. Harold Cox will not seek re election. Doug Gilliland is the other Place 1 incumbent. Filing ends March 7 at city hall with city secretary Marcella Cure.
Ed Reid was readmitted to Permian General Hospital for further surgery on his amputated legs to line them up for artificial limbs. Family members say visitors may be allowed during this time.
