Three Andrews boys David Moore Byford Sealy and Kenneth St Clair leave Denton with a 60 piece college band for a concert tour through Waco Temple and Victoria Texas. They will attend a band clinic in Victoria.
Mr and Mrs Bill Hughen will move to a Sun lease north Andrews into a new home. Mr and Mrs W B Puckett and S H Puckett visited Saturday with their daughter Mrs Harold Blair and Mrs Grace Blanchard.
Work started Thursday on the Andrews County Airport on the eastern outskirts of town. The Harry Campbell Construction Co. of Fort Worth will handle the job with D. A. Johnston in charge. The $75 working day contract calls for three hard surfaced runways 2750 feet and 2450 feet long and 100 feet wide, plus grubbed and brush cleared across the entire area.
The Andrews Volunteer Fire Department answered two calls Friday and Sunday nights. At Shafter Lake Oil Field an oil separator fire was quickly controlled by the gauger before the fire department arrived. Near Humble Camp a fire damaged the substructure of a drilling rig belonging to W. H. Black Drilling Co and nearly destroyed the entire rig before firefighters brought it under control.
Miss Edna Rogers of Hobbs New Mexico and Brice McDaniel of Odessa were married Sunday afternoon at 3 pm in Means Memorial Methodist Church. Rev Loyd Mayhew officiated. The couple will reside in Odessa after a wedding trip to Monterey Mexico.
The Lions sponsored a community benefit show featuring magician Bob Clark of Odessa at the High School Auditorium. The crowd numbered a little over one hundred and the Lions cleared about 30 after paying Clark 35. Attendees praised Clark's magic despite the light turnout.
Mr and Mrs I L Sinclair from Muleshoe spent Sunday visiting Mr and Mrs W L Stell.
State Highway Commissioner Wemple and Division Engineer McCarty visited Andrews to inspect the Andrews to Kermit highway. Judge Ramsey and Carl Betenbough joined the tour as the Commissioners Court urged adding the road to the state system with a two course asphalt and gravel plan at county expense.
Judge Kilmer B. Corbin of Lamesa announces his candidacy for State Senator from the 30th District. The 28 year old Dawson County Judge pledges to curb special interests and empower voters, citing his career as county judge, teacher, principal, and lawyer. He urges voters to study his public and private record as a basis for his campaign.
Andrews Mustangs defeated Seminole Indians in two elimination games to win the north half of District 7A and advance to Odessa for the district title. Farris Hamilton led scoring with 13 points in the Friday victory as Andrews won 31 27 in the final. Other teams included Seagraves and Denver City. finals at Odessa will feature Andrews and Seminole against Kermit and McCamey in the south half.
J P Roach attended the Texas Open Golf Tournament in San Antonio last weekend. He visited his brother Wagner Roach in Pleasantville Texas. Miss Neil Rose Griswell of Lubbock visited Norma Gene David here Sunday.
Corbin, a farmer, teacher, and lawyer from Lamesa, launches a Texas district bid. He advocates redistricting for West Texas representation, soil conservation, social security for the aged and dependent children, farm to market roads, better school funding, and forbidding land purchases by large corporations for non-original purposes. He vows to serve the people, not vested interests, if elected.
Andrews county imz tax collections rank among the highest in the state with 98.26 percent collected by January 1 end of tax period. 1947 tax total was 366486.43 and by January 31 this year 550125.05 had been collected, leaving 6361.40 to be collected. Deputy Tax Collector announced Wednesday. Comparison shows Andrews near top in percentage collected across counties.
Andrews community bids farewell to the Nixon family, longtime residents and Shell Oil employee Hub Nixon. They are moving to 1 Cowden lease in Eetor county. Neighbors express support and wish them good luck as Ferrel misses high school and Miss Juanita remains teaching, hoping for a smooth transition.
Eastern Star Chapter No Sd held a special program at the Masonic Hall on Monday February 16 honoring past Worthy Matrons and Patrons. A photograph of each past officer was hung. Worthy Matrons honored included Mrs Henry Heath Mrs Walter Mathews Mrs Carl Betenbough Mrs Chas W Roberts Mrs S N Galloway and Mrs H I Wilson. Worthy Patrons honored were W J Underwood and Bill Thomas.
The Andrews Lions hosted a luncheon at Means Memorial Church with Methodist Ladies serving. Attendees included members of the Andrews Study Club and Home Demonstration Club, plus A. L. Trimble from Midland and J. E. Pittman of the State Highway Department. Pittman spoke on highway beautification and tree planting plans for highways into Andrews. A committee was formed to work with the Commissioners Court on securing trees and labor. Supt. Hamilton spoke on the Scout ranch fund drive for the Davis mountains aiding the Buffalo Trail Scouts.
Louise McQuatters daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter McQuatters was voted the winner in last week s amateur show at the Wallace Theatre. Second prize went to Tex Collins, third to John Stacy Hamilton, and fourth to the Odd Fellow band.
Tests in Champaign and Urbana reveal fuel oil and heat waste due to faulty burners insulation and poor practices. Experts from Oil-O-Matic Division of Eureka Williams Corp used a detector device exhibited by W A Matheson to Mayors Babb and Hurd. Conservation surveys are offered free to users nationwide.
Phillips Petroleum No 1-W Texas University and Gulf Oil No 2-D-QQ test the Shafter Lake Devonian field with rotary drills to about 9 800 and 10 100 feet respectively. Both wells are located in the Shafter Lake-Devonian area of Andrews County about 10 miles northwest of the county seat.
Oil operators report several Ellenburger tests in Andrews County Texas. Sinclair Prairie Oil and Gulf report Devonian interval tests with depths near 9 000 feet and open hole production tests. Pure Oil marks No 8-E-A E P Cowden in the Dollar Hide area while Phillips No 5 M University prepares a drill stem test two miles from a nearby producing well.
The board of Insurance Commissioners announces that effective March 1 1948 Andrews will receive a 10 per cent fire record credit on normal fire insurance premiums for properties within city limits. This adds to the existing 5 per cent credit, making a total 10 per cent credit and 25 per cent savings over the 1946 15 per cent penalty for fire insurance buyers in the city.
Henry Heath travels to Dallas for heart ailment treatment by noted specialist Doctor S B Whitten. He is accompanied by his wife and son-in-law Jay Dannelly.
The Rebekah Club Ladies plan a box supper on Friday night February 20 at the old high school auditorium. Everyone is invited.
In Central Southwest Andrews County W H Black Drilling Co completed No 1 Lockhart and Brown near the Martin Ellenburger field flowing 660 barrels of 42.6 gravity oil in 24 hours with a 180 to 1 gas oil ratio. The Ellenburger pay ranges 8,585 to 8,935 feet.
Four bond issues totaling 950000 would fund about 71 miles of county roads from Andrews to the Dawson County line and to Jal New Mexico. Voters must approve two thirds to carry with some opposition to the overall cost and specific routes.
G F Wacker opens a new store in Andrews with strong public turnout and a warm welcome. Wallace Morris, manager, reports visitors and customers on Friday and Saturday exceeded expectations, praising both business prospects and community reception.

Foundation run for a new service station to be owned by C. W. Spencer on ranch highway 87 east of the Andrews Mercantile. K. W. Whisenant is the contractor. The cream brick building will take Humble products and be completed in 90 days.
