The Andrews community notes Eddie Brenholtz steps down as superintendent amid board discord and faculty tensions. The piece praises his move to restore harmony and urges the board to hire an outside top administrator to lead a stronger academic and athletic program for the students.
The 4-H Day in Andrews County includes a calf show at the youth center Friday morning with about 15 youngsters competing for the grand championship. Steers judged by Randy Lehmberg of Midland at 10 a.m. Auction at 11 a.m. with Lee Roy Brady of Odessa as auctioneer. Gene Irwin barbecue to follow. Tickets $1.50. Public invited. Show superintendent Gordon Cox and livestock committee members oversee the event.
The 4-H Favorite Food Show is set for Friday February 19 with judging at 9 30 a m and awards at 11 a m in the Community Building. It accompanies the Annual Calf Show and features 4-H girls ages 9 to 18 presenting entries from Basic 4 Foods groups. Two senior and two junior exhibitors will advance to the District 6 Food Show in Stanton on May 1 1971. Judges from Odessa will assess record books table appearance settings recipes menus and exhibitor knowledge. 4 H leaders for the year are Mrs Ken Helvey Mrs J C Wake Mrs Larry Crabtree Mrs Sam Watts Mrs Buddy Price Mrs Gail Dobbs and Mrs Herb Newhouse.
The Andrews High School student council voiced worry about American POWs and MIAs in Southeast Asia. They urged letters to Hanoi asking for neutral inspections, mail access, and release of the sick and wounded. Kaye Graham leads the project while a math teacher’s brother remains a three year POW.
The Rotary Club hosted its annual Valentine Dinner at the old Country Club building Friday night honoring members’ wives. Joe Weatherby welcomed guests including Gene and Mrs. Demmler and Bettye Dotson. Weatherby awarded a gift of appreciation to club pianist Mrs Mary Carpenter as The Brass provided music.
Andrews Mustangs finish third in the district behind Ector and Fort Stockton as they beat Seminole 90 to 77 on Tuesday night. Donald Roberts leads Seminole with 41 points, while Crawford Williams tops Andrews with 26 points and Mike Pearson adds 17. Junior varsity also wins, keeping a strong season run under coaches Frank Rice and Edd Farmer.
A. C. Cullen Akins will be guest speaker at the Andrews Downtown Lions Club 30th anniversary and awards banquet in the junior high cafeteria at 7 p.m. Pres. Jerry Jones will host, with The Brass from the high school providing music. Special guests include charter members, area presidents, district officers, and past leaders.
Teachers will attend a Friday workshop day while students are dismissed Thursday and return Monday. West Texas Education Center consultants Bill Whitefield and Sue Ashwood lead kindergarten to upper elementary sessions on reading readiness and social studies. Junior high staff receive drug abuse prevention prep, while high school staff join a building workshop led by Principal Brodie Hutchinson.
The annual Junior Senior banquet and prom will be held under the dome at the high school Saturday at 7 p m. Buffy Hutcheson senior president and Robert Knight junior class president give the welcome and response. Teachers and administrators attend as special guests. prom opens after the banquet with a secret theme reveal.
Superintendent E A Brenholtz resigns effective August 31 ending a 17 1/2 year tenure amid efforts to ease tensions over the assistant superintendent contract. The board accepts the move and plans to seek a new top administrator before the next board election. Brenholtz cites harmony within the district as the motive and thanks staff and citizens for their support.
Terri Ellis six year old daughter of Sheila and Bobby Ellis remained critically ill at Parkhill Hospital Dallas after a Monday night fire when her nightgown ignited from a candle. About 40 percent of her body burn injuries reported with possible lung damage and pneumonia developing by Tuesday night.
Dr. William Rittenhouse of Houston will lead a seven day revival at First Baptist Church from February 21 to 28 under the theme Gods POW. A WWII pilot and POW speaks on his experiences behind barbed wire at 10 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. Ralph McPheeters will lead special music. Public invited by Rev. Carl Grissom.
George Hannon, UT golf coach, will speak at the golfers banquet tied to the annual high school invitational tournament on February 26 and 27. Coach Dub Warden asks attendees to call 32892 today for reservations. A coaches school will be held with about 40 high schools expected.
