In Houston Sunday and Monday, observers noted a jewelry store window display urging support for President Johnsons War on Poverty. An official claimed the program, while meant to aid all, was being applied in practice solely to Latin Americans and Negroes, implying discrimination.
In a reader note Mrs Newell Woolam disputes prior column statements about wet cow lots. She notes no wet lots in the area due to irrigation wells and argues cows are no longer kept in cow lots. Milk is sold in cartons or jars and cows graze and drink water. calves receive some udder liquid. She thanks the paper and the editor promises to address both topics.
Former Andrews high school star Max Evans now living in Taos writes from Hollywood about MGM adapting his book The Rounders into a movie starring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. The tale follows two itinerant bronc busters in New Mexico and Arizona who dream of quitting the hard life to run a Tahita bar.
Andrews Mustangs rolled to a 91 67 victory over Pecos to finish the season in a tie for second place in District 2 AAA. David Burgen led with 14 points, Bobby Chenowith had 21, and Pecos forward Roy Wilson scored 10. Andrews built a 26 9 lead after the first period and led 52 25 at halftime.
A 23 year old Andrews man Charles Ervin O Shiels and a 16 year old youth are jailed after a month long theft spree. O Shiels is charged with receiving stolen goods and the juvenile with theft of loot. Loot recovered from O Shiels home and a friend's residence in Lamesa totals about 800 dollars with tires tools a rifle and a radio among the items. Bond set at 500 dollars. Also jailed this week were Claude Cahill Meriene Cahill and Jesse Saldana for burglary and passing forged checks with fines and sentences imposed. Authorities say the spree targeted small tools tires gasoline and other items.
An Andrews woman and her 16 year old daughter were seriously hurt when their car ran off the east service road, broke two fences, and plowed into a house near Falcon Trucking Co. The vehicle damage is total and the crash remains under investigation.
Forecast calls for clearing skies and rising temperatures in the Andrews area after two days of light rain. About half an inch of moisture was recorded in the county during the rain period. Weather details continue on Page 6.
A W Shoffit a Andrews High School chemistry teacher at 301 SW lith is nominated for the Manufacturing Chemists Association and Texas Chemical Council Outstanding Chemistry award. He is among five West Texas teachers and competes with 40 statewide contenders for a $200 prize based on student interest teaching ideas and extracurricular chemistry activities.
Carl C. Cox age 50 died at 11 30 p m Monday in Permian General Hospital. He had lived in Andrews for three weeks at Grace's Trailer Park 207 SW Ist coming from Hobbs New Mexico. He is survived by his mother Mrs Sally Cox of Ranger. Funeral arrangements are pending with Arlington Funeral Home in Eastland.
The Per mian General Hospital board authorized Administrator Everett Solomon to pursue agreements with a Lamesa attorney to collect delinquent accounts and to present final terms later. It also approved a loan of 7288.20 from Commercial State Bank to buy 36 television sets for patient rooms and reappointed 18 medical staff members.
Funeral services planned for Thelma Oleeta Davee 54 who died at Andrews Hospital after an extended illness. A resident of Andrews six years she was a member of the second Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband Clyde and four children with relatives across Texas and Oklahoma.
Mrs. Nettie Jennings of 807 NW 7th was burned over about 60 percent of her body when her clothing caught fire while warming by an open heater. Neighbors helped smother the flames and firemen arrived soon after as she was rushed to Per mian General Hospital in critical condition.
The Andrews chamber of commerce retail committee approves 1965 promotions including monthly dollar day on the first Monday, May billionth barrel celebration, Krazy Daze July 15, moonlight sale Aug 16, Mother of the Year May 9, Halloween in October, and extended summer hours June 1 to Aug 15. Committee heads include Alvis Moore and George McDaniel. a monthly supper meeting begins in April.
Incumbent Ellison Tom Jr filed to seek a three year term on the Andrews Independent School District board. Other terms expiring include Wayne Parker and Jimmy Wilkins. Elections set for April 3 with filing due March 3 and absentee voting March 15 to 30.
