A local column argues school trustees face pressure like oil tax men, noting trustees are unpaid yet essential in balancing county and school costs. The executive committee for the Presbyterian Council of the church met for a congregational session. Joe Carnes and Carl Ham were elected to key positions as planning and instruction leaders.
A Denton private pilot Cleo Harvey Vannoy 47 was found dead in a light plane wreck 13 miles east of Andrews. He planned to visit a friend in Odessa and had recently been cleared to fly. Relatives include his wife and three daughters.
The City Council on Monday night ordered a city election to choose a mayor and two aldermen. Incumbents Mayor Virgil Lasater and Aldermen William J. Sanders and D C Nix term this year. Election day is Tuesday April with election at City Hall and J S Montgomery presiding judge.
Athletic Director Glenn Frazier announced spring coaching assignments as basketball winds down. Max Goldsmith will compete in track next week. Truman Nix, with J D Partridge, leads baseball. Junior High track led by Forrest Scott plus 8th grade and 7th grade coaches. Kelton Brewer tennis. GW Warden golf. Vernon Johnson oversees indoor physical education and gym sports for non outdoor participants.
Police used a radar setup five miles south of Andrews to clock speeds up to 91 mph. Four patrol cars chased violators and six fines averaged 20 dollars each were paid. Some drivers were warned as the unit, aimed northbound, warned of future checks.
Mr and Mrs L E Pearl announce twins Eddie Ray and Reggie Ray born February 14 weighing six pounds ten ounces and six pounds eleven ounces Brenda Joyce born February 10 weighs six pounds, Debra Lee born February 11 weighs five pounds nine ounces to Mr and Mrs T C Works and Mr and Mrs D E Hill. Phillip Johnson announces a seven pound son born February 12.
Volunteer firemen were called this week to stop three fires in and around Andrews. On Sunday they rushed to the Gene Irwin ranch northwest of Andrews to douse a burning feed stack threatening a barn and corrals. Later Sunday night they smothered a fire started from a garbage barrel in an alley on Northwest Sixth. Monday a grass fire near a small garage on Northeast Sixth received prompt treatment.
Strikes occur at No. 1-C Means six miles north of Andrews with initial test recovering 280 feet of 273 gravity oil and 180 feet of heavy oil cut mud, while another test yielded 8,556 feet of gas and 115 feet of oil. multiple Devonian and San Andres prospects are planned or tested nearby with various depths and locations, including University and Glorieta wildcats and Ocean-like producers in the Shafter Lake area.
An illustrated program on remodeling store fronts was presented to Lions Club members at their noon meeting Tuesday. Ray Sharbutt introduced Jerry Handerson of Kawneer Manufacturing, who spoke with slides. He stressed a store front should identify the shop, offer a large display area, and provide easy entrances and exits to attract customers. He warned a modern front is essential to survive in a competitive market.
Andrews Independent School Board of Trustees president Ham resigns for business reasons after two years in the post. James A. Ulmer, head of Ulmer Bros. building firm and former mayor, is appointed to complete Ham’s term. Ham commends the board and staff and thanks administrators and patrons for the rewarding experience.
Max E. Ramsey the Andrews County Attorney was elected a director of the First State Bank at a Tuesday meeting. Ramsey replaces J. R. Martin Sr., former bank president and current director. Jackson Parker of Odessa is president. Other directors include Guy McGill Carl Underwood J. R. Martin Jr. and J. O. Boothe.
The senior class presents the second performance of Meet Corliss Archer at 8:00 PM in the high school auditorium. A matinee was shown yesterday afternoon for students, directed by Mrs. Maxine Finch with Mrs. Montrell Cox in the lead role of Corliss Archer.
Mr and Mrs Bruce Hart accompanied by their son Jasper spent the weekend in El Paso near Ft Bliss. Jasper departed for P O E in Tacoma Washington and will ship out soon for overseas duty.
Child Welfare officials and laymen met in Midland to plan a cooperative group home providing temporary care for dependent neglected children. Ector Midland and Andrews county representatives attended with several named local figures. Walter Beardsley was named permanent chairman as four committees from three counties prepared to start work.
Two men were injured when their automobile overturned eleven miles south of Andrews on Wednesday afternoon. G. L. Burnett age 29 of Odessa and Bill Howell age 25 of Midland received emergency treatment at Permian General Hospital after the 2:00 PM crash. Howell, the driver, appears to have lost control and the car left the highway into a pasture.
