Bob Henslee a two time convict was arrested Saturday by Deputy Sheriff John Suggs and jailed on charges of stealing a pickup at Menard a Ford at Brownfield and a Chrysler at Plains He has served two penitentiary terms and is wanted in New Mexico A 15 year old Andrews girl who accompanied him to Menard provided a written confession to the theft.
The Junior Historian article by Frieda Lucas of Wichita Falls recounts a Texas legend of fifty million dollars in gold buried by a Spanish pack train between Clyde and Abilene. The tale traces a map sent to Spain, later found in a cathedral, and later digs as late as 1937. Contributors span many Texas chapters and cities.

F E Jolly driver for Ash ley Drilling Company Eunice New Mexico was charged with driving while intoxicated after a three way wreck south of Andrews on highway 51 involving Ira Mitchell and a car driven by Ray Reece colored of Seminole.
L J Les Slentz of Kilgore and Charles T Slack of Taylor join the Midland district office of the Railroad Commission of Texas as engineers. Both are January 1949 graduates of Texas A M College in mechanical engineering. Slentz goes to the Lubbock office. Slack to Midland headquarters. Also note marriage licenses issued February 8 to Ira L Hagins and Fannie Mae Rotan.
After a brief talk with Judge Milton Ramsey the Commissioners Court stated they would seek tax attorney guidance on funding procedures. They planned to contact committee chairs to move forward with definite plans once legal steps are cleared.
District 5-A playoff schedule in Andrews High School gym pits northern teams Denver City and Andrews Mustangs against southern teams Monahans and Fort Stockton. Andrews and Fort Stockton open Friday at 2 pm, Denver City vs Monahans at 3 15 pm, with two more games on Friday night and three on Saturday. First and second place earn trophies. ten players will be named to the all tournament team with gold basketballs awarded.
The Faithful Workers Sunday School Class held a luncheon Feb 12 at Mrs. Sam Dyess home honoring December January February March birthdays. A birthday cake highlighted the table as honorees and members exchanged gifts and enjoyed a social hour.
Mr Ray Phillips and J K Peterman traveled to Abilene on Tuesday for an inferred local engagement.
Graduates needing aid to enter the University of Texas next fall can apply for 50 Wilbur S Davidson $100 freshman scholarships. To qualify, applicants must show financial need, good character, and rank in the top half of their class. Applications go to the dean of student life at UT.
Major college game tickets will be tighter as the Dallas Cotton Bowl expands. State Fair of Texas offers 20 year seat insurance at 50 dollars each, guaranteeing one seat for all games at face value. Deadline February 28.
Hollis A. Moore Jr. reports Texas will need 29,844 new elementary teachers from 1949-50 to 1953-54 to replace leavers and handle higher enrollment. A shortage of more than 20,000 teachers is forecast as certificates issued in 1947-48 were under 2,000.
Eugene Bryne and Charlotte Landon attended the Heard Byrne wedding in Archer City last weekend. Eugene Bryne served as best man for his brother Kenneth, strengthening family ties in a small town ceremony.
Andrews County Commissioners tentatively fixed the 1950 taxable values at 36 million dollars after a meeting with tax representatives from oil firms and local property groups. The estimate assumes current land personal and city property values, with oil well additions boosting totals to about 29.46 million for 1950. Tax officials noted oil firms once bore a larger tax burden but growth now shifts the balance to land and personal property.
Plans are underway for the state wide University of Texas Interscholastic League annual meeting to be held May 5-7 in Austin. Schools from Conferences AA A and B will attend multiple league competitions on the University campus. The annual basketball tournaments for AA A and B conferences are scheduled for March 3-5. The City Conference meet including San Antonio Houston Dallas and Fort Worth schools occurs May 13-14 in San Antonio with the first City Conference basketball tournament set for March 11-12 in Houston.

A formal installation is planned for Home Demonstration Council officers on Monday February 21 at 2 PM in the primary school auditorium. All county club members are urged to attend.

On Monday evening the ladies of the Methodist Church organized the Wesleyan Service Guild for gainfully employed women unable to attend day meetings. Officers elected include President Mrs. A C Mize and Vice President Miss Gertrude Ford. a long list of appointed roles followed. A installation service featured pastor installation and singer Miss Joyce Jones, with coffee and cookies served to numerous attendees.
Rev. Homer Sheats District Superintendent of the Assembly of God Church was guest speaker at the local church Wednesday night. The service was well attended according to Pastor Rev. Quilan. Evangelist and Mrs. T. M. Hutson of Seminole are scheduled to speak next Sunday at both the morning and evening services.
Mr and Mrs L E Rho entertained with a turkey dinner Tuesday night with guests including Mr and Mrs N N Jones Mr and Mrs John Ross and Mr and Mrs Carl Hamen.
