Three Candidates File For City Council Race

Three candidates have filed for the city council seat to be decided in April. Incumbent Bob Barber seeks re election for the two seat. Tommy Williams also filed this week. Incumbent for position four R B Jordan has not filed for re election but seeks the county clerk post. Filing for Position 4 is Jim Dotson.

Connally Praises Andrews For Clean City Award

Governor John Connally cites Andrews for honorable mention in the national cleanest town contest. He praises the city as a model for others while noting Andrews has placed in the contest for two consecutive years. Gertrude Averyt led the clean-up drive and scrapbook entry under Morris Shaw's Civic Committee. Chamber of Commerce sponsored the effort with four Texas prize winners including three West Texas towns.

Car Hits Post and Store in Local Accidents

Over three days three crashes occurred in the Andrews area. Kenneth Allen of Odessa lost control on Eunice highway and hit a telephone pole with no injuries. Melvin Lipham of 911 NW 4th struck Andrews Auto Supply after jumping a curb causing about 750 dollars in damage.

White remains critical after Oklahoma wreck near city

James E. White of Andrews is in critical condition at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City after a car crash last week near the city. He underwent surgery Tuesday and is attended by his wife Kay, a Permian General Hospital nurse, who is at his bedside. Several Permian General nurses are helping by working an extra day to support her.

Child Survives Vehicle Backing Incident at Home

A two year old boy, Jessie Losalla of Star Route 1 near Florey, was backed over by his father's vehicle on Sunday afternoon and suffered minor injuries. He was treated at Permian General Hospital and released the next day. Soft sand cushioning the fall was credited with saving him.

City of Andrews Files Water District Appeal

The City of Andrews and named landowners filed a petition in 109th District Court seeking to remove seven of the city water wells from the South Plains Underground Water Conservation District No 4. The suit challenges a prior order by the Texas Water Rights Commission granting a new district and calls for a hearing on the matter.

Local TSTA Unit To Hear E L Galyean Speak

E L Galyean director of Research Records and Membership for the Texas State Teachers Association will address Andrews County local unit members at 7 30 p m Monday in the junior high auditorium. He discusses the teacher retirement law and brings decades of public school experience including roles in elementary teaching, administration and state education.

West Texas Trail Ride Association Forms Plans

A Wednesday night meeting established the West Texas Trail Ride Association to coordinate the annual West of the Pecos ride starting in late June from Andrews to Pecos. Ten West Texas citizens organized the group to manage parade and rodeo opening events on July 1, with support from the Andrews County Sheriff’s Posse.

Play-Off Study Meet Schedules Bi district Regional Plans

An Andrews delegation will attend a planning meeting Sunday to determine bi district and regional basketball playoff formats. Four area superintendents and Omar Douglas of Brownfield lead the committee with potential venues and dates.

Andrews County to Hold Primary Election Officials

County commissioners appoint election judges for five precincts for the May 7 primary and general election. Precinct 1: Judge Mrs John Harrell with assistant Mrs W H Munn. Precinct 2: Judge Ver noin Payne with assistant Mrs M Averyt. Precinct 3: Judge L A Ford with assistant Mrs W A Bevers Jr. Precinct 4: Judge Gaylord Williams with assistant B B Six. Precinct 5: Judge Lorraine Parker with assistant Mrs Averyt. Also transfer 38 500 from General Fund to city as the county’s share of the summer recreation program.

Book Fair Opens This Week Hosted by Rotary Club

Rotary Club hosts a book fair at the storefront on Broadway west of Main starting today from 4 to 7 PM, continuing Friday 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 10 AM to 2 PM. Citizens urged to donate used books, mark prices, and bring items to sell with proceeds going to owners while Rotary collects a 10 percent commission.
