A formal application to the Interstate Commerce Commission asks for a permit to construct and operate a railroad from Seagraves to Odessa. The effort, backed by Seminole and Andrews counties, hinges on solid economic data to prove need and future benefits.
Local planners and investors argue the rail project will benefit the Permian Basin and cities Odessa Andrews and Seminole by improving freight costs overhead and traffic flow. They state the project is a good deal for communities and investors with final approval contingent on Lord and ICC.
The ICC will review a formal railroad application after a six week questionnaire deadline. A hearing will be set near Andrews or Seminole, with detailed examination by ICC examiners and opponents. Supporters across the state back the project as an economic must for Seminole, Andrews, and Odessa.
A brindle hound keeps vigil beside a dead playmate on a Ruskin road near an oil unit four miles southeast of Andrews. Despite cold rain and snow from Sunday to Tuesday, the dog refused food and water until warmth finally arrives when help lifts him into a car.
Eleven civil cases are scheduled to come before Judge Russell Austin in the 109th district court this week. County records show 330 passenger license tags sold in Andrews County four teen days after sale began. Last year 4,224 tags were sold, leaving 3,894 still to issue before April 1. Tax Assessor Floyd Peacock warns daily targets would strain offices and create long waits if fans rush at the end.
Mrs. J. W. Davis former Andrews resident died Wednesday at 2 a m in Palestine Texas at age 77 She lived in Andrews from 1948 to 1958 Funeral services were held in Palestine at 4 p m and graveside services followed Friday at Andrews Cemetery officiated by Rev Carl Grissom She is survived by one daughter and two sons.
Permian Basin Railroad Co officials signed a large ICC application to build a Odessa to Seagraves railroad. After 27 months of planning and a white paper on Andrews and Seminole, the filing heads to Washington with a six week ICC questionnaire to follow. The project aims to connect Odessa and surrounding counties to attract industry and prevent economic decline, with hearings to be scheduled by the ICC.
Socony Mobil Oil Company Inc. No. 2-BA Falken is the fourth Ellenburger producer in Andrews county multipay Lowe field. Perforations at 13,306-316 feet yielded 28 bpd oil and 82 bbl water after mud and regular acid treatment. Oil gravity 50, GOR 566-1. Earlier, Leon ard lime pay opener flowed 204 bpd of 41.8 gravity oil plus 68 percent water from 9,235-58 feet through a 24-64 inch choke. The project also completed as the fourth Silurian producer from 12,820-869 feet, gauging 408 bpd of 46 gravity oil plus 76 bbl mud, through a 24-64 inch choke. Site location in section 21, block 40, T-2-N, T & P survey, 15 miles SE of Andrews. In Andrews, 34 miles SW of C-Ranch pool, Pan American Petroleum staked a 12,700-foot Mississippian wildcat No. 2 AU David Falken, 660 feet south and 2,001 feet east of section 1, block 41, T-3-N, GRMMB&A survey, 11 miles SE of Andrews. Dr. W. R. Cashion of Permian General Hospital will address the Andrews Chapter of the American Cancer Society at 7 30 p m Thursday at City Hall 201 N W Ist. The public is invited.
Ovation given to Dr Louis and Adel Gallanffy duo-pianists in the old high school auditorium. More than 350 people, many children, filled the seats for almost two hours of Liszt, Strauss and other pieces with encores. The performers traveled from Las Vegas and San Angelo and impressed the Andrews Music Club, which lost money on the event.
Dr Louis Galanffy, a Hungarian refugee and former Miskolc city official, described the 1956 Hungarian Revolition to listeners. He recounted student arrests and a violent crackdown, including a policeman killed, workers mobbing police, and public hangings witnessed by his conservatory students.
The National Thespian Society presents Andrews High School with a twin cast performing Broadway's A Roomful of Roses for four nights. Shows start at 7 p.m. Monday Tuesday Friday and Saturday. Andrews Volunteer Firemen answered four calls from last Wednesday per Fire Marshall Womack Jones. One Friday morning blaze at an asphalt unit at the State Highway Department caused extensive damage after 8:30 am. A house burned completely early Wednesday. nearby Jal and Kermit units fought the flames at the vacant Dollarhide property. Other incidents included a grease fire at Pete and Gladys Cafe and a heater theater fire on Frankel City Highway with minor damage.
