Dr Hattie Love Rankin spoke at the Andrews Study Club meeting in First Methodist church. She recently returned from 36 years as a medical missionary in China and warned of Russia’s influence and potential danger to the United States if unchecked.
Plans continue for the annual Lions Club Amateur Night at the high school auditorium on March 10. Tickets go on sale next week. Contestants register acts with J Lee Smith, program chairman. Two classes adults and students compete with first second third prizes in each. A door prize will be drawn during the two hour show.
E. L. Hurley manager of the Corner Drug chose a specialty item for the anniversary Rexall sale beginning today. The item is 144 gold fish from Toledo Ohio but the freight bill turned out to be $10.60.
Funeral services for Walter Mathews 53 Andrews county pioneer were held at Means Memorial Methodist church with Rev Reymond Van Zandt and Rev Houch H Hunt officiating. Mathews born May 11 1897 in Mertens Texas moved to Andrews in 1917 later to Arkansas. Survivors include wife two sisters and several stepchildren. Interment was in Andrews cemetery with Singleton's Funeral Home arranging.
Adams Food Market marks its third anniversary this week in the Underwood building Andrews. The celebration features a specials page for Friday and Saturday and an hourly grocery basket giveaway from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Registration is open Friday and Saturday.
Funeral services were held in Beaumont at 2 p m for E O Phelps tool pusher for Stanolind Oil and Gas Co who died of a heart attack. He had prior attacks and illness for two weeks. Body taken to Beaumont by Singleton's Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife father sister and half sister.
The NEWS reveals two Pontiac ads, one signed by Farmer-Davidson Motor Co of Andrews and the other by Thames Motor Co selling Buicks. The correct signature ad ran after the error was found, and apologies are offered to both firms.
The Texas Rural Road Association of Texas requests a March 9 meeting in Andrews to organize a stronger state rural road association. Judge Milton Ramsey announced the plan and the group aims for 100000 members.
Forty Boy Scouts and five leaders from Odessa district attend the Black Gold Court of Honor on February 9. Scouts from Troops 156 56 and Senior Scout Unit No 6 receive second and first class and star and life awards. leaders R S Dillard Vaughn Griswold Rogers Gavitt and Hammond present.
Andrews plans for an Air Force Volunteer Reserve Training unit with Roy Williams to organize a squadron at the Stanolind office. The lodge also releases W Virtue and Co from a ground floor lease due to financing shortfalls, and discusses building options including a second story by W J Underwood and son. The old lodge building is deemed hazardous.
Ronald V. Rodman of Oklahoma City, president of Anderson-Prichard Oil, will discuss Current Economics of the Petroleum Industry before the Permian Basin Chapter of the American Petroleum Institute in Odessa. R. C. Smith will preside at Ector County Park, with barbecue by the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang and a $1.50 charge for food. Rodman has led Anderson-Prichard since 1947 after roles at Bay Petroleum and is active in the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce.
A Nash driven by Mrs. Rusty Fitzgerald of Humble collided with a school bus driven by Ed Spear near Bum Gibbons headquarters on a Thursday around 4 p m. The Fitzgerald baby sustained a slight injury while no bus passengers were hurt. the Fitzgerald car was damaged.
Neil Longley son of Mr and Mrs Dewey Longley was placed on the honor roll at Texas Western College of El Paso where he studies in his second year He is a 1950 Andrews high graduate and attended that school before enrolling in the El Paso college
County Judge Milton Ramsey and Virgil Reed, superintendent of the Andrews County Hospital, traveled to Austin on Thursday to seek federal aid for the local hospital.
Five new producers were staked in Southwest Andrews County as Pure Oil, Magnolia Petroleum, and Stanolind advance explorations. The No. 55–58 Cowden wells in Dollarhide and nearby sections target Devonian pay, with plans for 8 299 feet depths and precise line distances. Stanolind reports two completions in Fullerton and North Cowden Deep, including No. 5A University and No. 2 R/AAF Cowden, with notable 24 hour outputs and depths around 5 200 to 11 400 feet. Production efforts continue across the Dollarhide-Clear Fork pool and related fields.
The Andrews county Boy Scout fund drive began with a school cafe breakfast led by Thomas D. Hamilton. Twenty workers formed teams to raise the county quota as part of the Buffalo Trails Council aiming to collect 60 786 dollars for the year.
