Arnold Dewitt Braswell 76 died on arrival at Permian General Hospital Friday afternoon after an apparent heart attack. He lived in Mountain Air before moving to Andrews and worked for the Andrews Telephone Company until retirement. Survived by daughter Noramene Locke sister Ona Betenbough sister Warren brother Dorris Braswell all of Andrews. Funeral services were pending at Singleton Funeral Home.
A joint meeting of three civic clubs will be held Tuesday at the Community building. Guest speaker will be James Harnell, new executive director of the Texas Industrial Commission from AUSLIN. Harnell will give an informal talk as Downtown Lions Rotary Club and Kiwanis join for lunch.
Calvin Withers retired from Brownies Well Service on year end and received a seven figure profit sharing check from owner L. Z. Brown. A 20 year service award Rollex and a lifetime vesting milestone followed a career since 1948 with roles from rig operator to pusher. Withers plans to enter livestock and used oilfield gear business while wife Zella shifts to catering small group meals. They reside in Andrews with three daughters Linda Pence Hobbs Jan Redding Oklahoma and Gay Turner plus five grandchildren.
S and D Foods headed by S W Duncan will hold a week long grand opening at their NW Avenue G store. Prizes include 25000 in gold bond stamps a bicycle a barbecue grill a portable vacuum cleaner and a silver service. Public invited to visit during the event.

A total of .35 inches of rain fell in Andrews during five brief showers from Thursday evening to Friday morning. The first showers hit around 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with light hail resembling rice. Two more showers occurred in the early Friday hours, including an 8:30 a.m. shower. This marked the first measurable rain in 1969, following a dry January that left grass tinderdry and fed grass fires nationwide.
The Mustangs lost 59 to 67 to Monahans, dropping to third place behind Mona Hans and Fort Stockton. Johnny Hatcher led with 15 points, Sammy Lee 14, while Monahans' Robert Smith scored 24 and Eddie Foster 14 for the Lobos. Coach Edd Farmer's team closes the season at Kermit Tuesday with a district record of 8-3.
Carl Cox and Bill Harris will present results of a cotton research report Tuesday. Sponsored by Texas Electric Service, the study covers cotton industry prospects. Invitation has been sent to all members of the industrial foundation, Chamber of Commerce development committee, city council, school board, and county commissioners court, per Lloyd Stoebner.
A beautification committee of the Andrews County Chamber of Commerce hosts a Monday 7 30 p m meeting at Andrews Junior High School Little Theatre open to all residents. Guest speaker George Patterson city manager Snyder will share a slide program about Snyder’s 1968 Operation Sparkle award and city improvements.
Two additional grass fires were reported in Andrews County on Wednesday. The first burned about 10 miles south near the Odessa highway and bystanders used coats and cardboard to beat it out before firefighters arrived. The second fire occurred near the damp ground area.
