Andrews county commissioners met oil company representatives in a session ahead of the new budget. Oil men urged fair taxation and possible value revisions. officials said current tax rates are favorable and discussed using federal revenue sharing to fund a rodeo ground building for stock shows and public meetings.
Texas Highway Patrol cited 17 youths for unlawful assembly after racing on Taylor Road Sunday night. They appeared before Peace Justice Jay Williams and received a $50 minimum fine plus $32.50 probated sentences. Officers noted a suspicious sack with white powder later sent to a lab, and the group was inspected for needle marks after fines paid.
As of Tuesday evening no new applications reached officials. Two school and two city positions were open with incumbents the only filers. C. E. Carruth and Lloyd Morgan seek re election to the school board. Bill Gordon and Bob Wheeler seek re election to the city council. City filings go to the City Secretary. school filings to the administration building in Otto Langlois’s office.
The Mustangs defeated Pecos 60 to 55 to claim the Andrews district crown the first since 1968. Coach Edd Farmer emphasized poise and balance as key factors while boosters celebrated on a night of tense play. The win sets up bi-district and regional scenarios to determine further advancement.
An Andrews mother Catalina Valadez, 31, and three other children stayed in Medical Arts Hospital after a collision south of Lamesa killed Rudy Nieto Valadez 40 and his two year old son Edwin and injured others. A Mexican nanny Eduviges Gonzales Marques 19 died at the scene. The cotton burr truck driver Polito Trevino 45 was uninjured. Funeral services were pending Bran non Funeral Home Lamesa.
Andrews High School will host the 1973 Junior-Senior Prom with a 7:30 p.m. banquet in the high school area, a 9 p.m. to midnight prom, and a 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Fun Wake at the Community Building. The event features honoring the Selle and Beau, with several couples nominated and Star from Austin providing music. Tickets for the wake are $2 per couple and $1.50 for a stag.
Permian General Hospital board prepared for the upcoming accreditation survey set for February 20 by Joint Commission for Accreditation and the American Hospital Association and American Medical Association. The voluntary review examines medical records, facilities, and procedures.
The Andrews school board postpones its regular meeting due to a schedule clash with the Pecos district basketball game. It will reconvene Tuesday night Feb 2 at 7 30 pm to discuss repairs to the junior high shop building and review vocational education trends and program additions for Andrews High School.
