A man delivering a mail box at the post office drew the attention of Postmaster Bob Luck who suspected him of being Dr. J. Kirk, once a recorder on a Texaco seismograph unit in Andrews County in 1944.
The Andrews city council approved a five percent residential rate cut for customers using more than 65 kilowatt hours, plus a new rate for all electric homes and optional school rates. They authorized a bond recall to save about forty thousand dollars in interest and set an April 2 mayor and two council seats election with term allocations by lot.
The Andrews Rotary Club will observe the 60th anniversary with a Ladies Night banquet at the Andrews Country Club on Feb 26. Raymond Sharbutt says it will be social with no speaker as part of a global celebration by 11,800 Rotary clubs and 560,000 Rotarians in 127 countries.
A chamber of commerce oil promotion committee held a brainstorming session on Friday to plan the billionth barrel oil celebration set for May in connection with oil appreciation day. Chairman Jimmy Wilkins led ideas ranging from parades to tours and urged broader civic and social involvement. Other committee meetings were scheduled for Tuesday with the retail and industrial groups.
Andrews High School speech students capped the first sweep stakes trophy in the school history at the Snyder tournament, beating 15 area schools. Judy Wetzel won first in extemporaneous speaking. Cheryl Sharbutt and Roy Parker also reached finals. Four high school debate teams advanced to finals as events continued Saturday afternoon.
A total of 10 500 pine tree seedlings arrived in Andrews last week for Operation Windbreak. The Andrews Garden Club and Andrews County sponsor the project with 500 trees to the club and 10 000 to the county. Mrs Bill Lowe leads the committee and says the trees will provide wind protection and landscaping across city and county parks schools and the cemetery.
Four members of the Andrews Mustangs signed letters of intent after the 1964 season. Steve Reed and Ronnie Hawthorne joined Texas while Dennis Cowan and Ronnie Jones inked with Stephen F. Austin at Nacogdoches. Reed and Jones earned District 2-AAA nods on offense and defense. Cowboys Cowan will study pre medicine and Jones physical education. Reed will study pharmacy Hawthorne undecided. Earlier quarterback Floyd Lindsey signed with Abilene Christian College. After five scholarships this year, two or more more were expected.
Seminole Indians win 73 62 over Andrews Mustang boys to extend their 11 year jinx. Kenny Roberts led with 21 points while Freddie Simpson added 19 andJimmy Nelms 18. Mustangs end season at Pecos Tuesday night at 8 p m with 12 14 overall.
Downtown Lions Club schedules a ladies night banquet for February 23 at 7 p m in the high school home area. International counselors M C Woolam and Charlie Carruth will be honored as special guests for their Lions service. Tickets cost 2 25 and have been mailed to club members. unneeded tickets should be returned per Roy Buckner president.
The 38 member convention committee of the chamber of commerce meets at 10 a.m. on February 23 to set monthly dates and assign sub committees for 12 program items. They will develop a convention gimmick handout and a community events calendar while seeking help from the press and radio. The group plans to invite the Texas six man football coaching school for a summer meeting in Andrews and continues support for local events like the junior high band festival and Highway 80 Tennis Tournament.
