The Andrews school board ordered an election to choose two trustees, with terms ending for Dr. Z. W. Hutcheson Jr. and Jimmy Jones this year. Presiding judges were named for the Franklin City and administration building boxes, and several staff resignations and new hires were noted along with band and driver education changes.
The National Thespian Society stages A Roomful of Roses in four performances at the Little Theater during the week of February 18. A double cast will perform two nights each, with tickets at 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for students.
Rev. Dayle Combs becomes pastor of Andrews Calvary Baptist Church, succeeding Rev. Clinton Eastman. He came from Swenson Baptist Church where the church won the 1962 Achievement Program in Stonewall Kent Association. Combs, a 1957 Hardin Simmons graduate, is married to Glenda Herrington and has four children.
County officials weighed a plan to take full operation of the 18 hole course and charge $96 per family yearly with $1.50 weekday fees, $2.50 weekend fees, and a 5 percent tournament levy. County losses were cited and club officials outlined past salary costs and subsidies.
Hungarian born Louis and Adel Galanffy, a two piano duo, will perform at 8 15 p m Friday in the old high school auditorium. Sponsored by the Andrews Music Club they are noted Community Concert Artists with national fame. Tickets are 1 for adults 50 cents for students and are sold at the chamber of commerce office club members or at the door. A reception will follow in the junior high cafeteria with public invitation.
A city council meeting set April 2 for a double ballot election to elect a mayor and two aldermen for two year terms and to amend the city charter. The second ballot would alter how officials are elected and extend council terms to three years, with council members chosen by place rather than at large. An annexation ordinance was debated but not adopted as readings failed to secure support.
A cold snap brought two inches of snow to Andrews after a half inch of rain. Temperatures plunged from 79 to 16 degrees, with hazardous roads and many area schools closed. No accidents were reported. Farmers welcomed the moisture as crops benefited. A second cold front was forecast to arrive later tonight.
Andrews Mustangs overwhelmed Ector Eagles 72 54 as nine of ten players scored and Emory Smith led with 14 points. The win left Andrews at 11 15, setting up Friday’s season finale vs Fort Stockton as Jan Johnson is crowned Basketball Queen with Betty Craig and Sue Smith in attendance.
