Barbara Roach a 17 year old high school senior daughter of Mr and Mrs J P Roach won the Miss Valentine title by popular vote at the Valentine Dance festivities at the Youth Center Mayor Leonard Craft officiated the ballot count and named runners up Pat Braley and Lynda Price The event was sponsored by local merchants and included gift presentations at the dance with prize sponsors listed for each contestant The dress code was semi formal and the Youth Center will be closed Saturday night to allow attendance at the senior high school dance
Pas L. A. Warden was elected president of the Andrews Country Club at the annual meeting. New officers include Raymond Bristow as secretary and Maurice Tripplehorn as treasurer. Directors elected are John Stubbs and M. O. Woolam to succeed the late Judge Milton Ramsey, with ongoing terms for Eddie Ratliff, D. C. Underwood, Vernon Johnson, and H. B. Merritt.
Andrews Independent School system officials were re elected by the school board. Superintendent T A Roach will serve a three year term starting next year. Several administrators including M O Woolam Joe Tidrow J Lee Smith Vernon Payne J B Youngblood Tommy Hendricks Eddie Brenhoiltz and Frank Hyde plus Glenn Frazier were renewed for two year terms. The meeting was moved up as Charlie Carruth and Troy Lasater left for the American Association of School Administrators meeting in Atlantic City.
At a Community Building meeting Tuesday Dr. Neil Hayes was unanimously chosen president of the Andrews County unit of the American Cancer Society. Officers include Mrs. Charles Roberts Jr as vice president Mrs. John E Smith as secretary and Raymond Bristow as treasurer. By-laws were approved and a 25 to 75 member board of directors will be formed with committees on publicity fund raising service education and medical matters. Many attendees were automatic board members.

The Andrews city council announces an April 2 election date for mayor and two aldermen. Candidates must meet residency rules, with mayoral hopefuls needing 12 months in Andrews. The council also trims meter fines, discusses water tower work, and schedules a second and fourth Monday meeting cadence.
Andrews junior and senior high student councils host the annual West Texas Forum of Student Councils. More than 300 students and sponsors from Sweetwater Pecos Snyder Del Rio and other towns attend all day Saturday. Delbert Downing Odessa Chamber of Commerce discusses Appreciation of the American Way of Life with two discussion periods exploring council authority student-teacher relations and other topics.
The Commercial State Bank of Andrews was chosen as county depository for two years by the Commissioners Court. It offers 3 percent on time deposits over six months and 2.5 percent on 90 to 180 day deposits, plus a 1/64 percent annual loan rate for 180 days. The First National Bank, current depository, offered 1/50 percent loan rate.
Andrews Mustangs, 6-19, host second-place Kermit Yellowjackets to close the season after a 58-18 loss to Pecos. Don Adams led Andrews with six points while Billy Simmons and Bubba Ephrian paced Pecos with 23 and 16. Coach Vernon Johnson seeks a first 2-AAA win against the league leaders.
More than 1,000 young people visited the Youth Center since it opened February 1, according to director Gerald Woodward. Dancing was the most popular activity, with pool and pong pong close behind. The center operates 4-6 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. daily and 2-5 p.m. on Sundays.
