Car and scooter crash injures 11 year old at intersection
An 11 year old Andrews youth, Eugene Sawyer, suffered multiple cuts and bruises in a 1 p.m. collision at NW 4th and Ave B. The scooter rider was thrown clear and is under observation at Permian General Hospital in satisfactory condition. The other vehicle was driven by Leonard W. Jernigan. Damages totaled about 500 dollars. No citations issued pending further investigation by officers Tipton and Clark.

Early Day Official Dies in Graham
William Jake Mathis aged 92 one of the first commissioners of Andrews County before it was organized is buried in Graham. A homesteader who filed land near Whalen Lake he served as county commissioner, rode by horseback to Stanton, and left Andrews County in 1912 to live in Young County. Survived by wife Hattie Bell two other sons Bob and Frank one sister and four grandchildren.

Nobuhiko Yama a foreign exchange student from Japan told teachers at the Andrews Classroom Teachers Association meeting that Japanese students study more subjects and endure tougher entrance exams. He noted six day school weeks six hours daily and equal access to basic education while stressing the heavy workload for high school entrants. He contrasted Japan's emphasis on all subjects for early employment and the higher emphasis American students place on chosen interests. He described low teacher pay about 50 dollars monthly and that some high schools are technical while others are college preparatory.
