A Andrews resident Sue receives a surprise valentine inside the issue via a half page ad arranged with her husband in Vietnam. The News helped coordinate the greeting through her sergeant over months as Cupid theme for readers. Planning moves ahead for a larger two day July 3rd and 4th celebration with an expanded fireworks finale.
Andrews reports hospitals and the nursing home full as flu and respiratory illnesses spike in recent weeks. Authorities note a total of 234 beds in use and urge residents to seek care early as cases rise.
A friend misplaced his lower denture plate at a health facility. An abdominal X ray located the denture resting in the stomach, and doctors plan to recover it. The incident is unusual and not intended as humor for the patient.
San Marcos dentist Dr Charles Jarvis once described a bold remedy for floating lower denture plates. He reportedly ties a 14 inch fish line to the plate and to a fish hook used to yank the line after swallowing. He claimed the plate then sinks, with no patients returning for follow up.
Distributive education students from DE high school earned eight awards at the Odessa area contest. Cynthia White and Cindy Howell won first places in outstanding merchandising and advertising. State contenders include Morris Sanders Mike Andel Brick Gilliland Karen Taylor and others advancing or placing across sales demonstrations public speaking service station work and check-out events.
Jake Roach ends a 47 year tenure with Humble Oil in Crane and Kilgore after starting July 7 1927. He plans to settle in Andrews and reflects on a career spanning boom towns and camp life, where he helped build Humble oil field camps and held a clerical inventory role.
The board granted a 30 cent per hour across the board raise for all auxiliary personnel including secretaries and bus drivers and approved a 2600 raise for Supt Brenholtz. They placed Bill Gordon and Don Gilliland on master’s degree teacher schedules, hired Wayne Garner as senior high teacher and coach, set election dates for April 4, and extended absentee voting hours.
Fort Stockton, undefeated in District 2AAA, defeated Andrews 83 to 59 as Juan Garza led with 28 points and James Pina added 23. Randy Laminack scored 19 for Andrews, who trailed 23-12 after one period and never closed within three in the second.
Permian General Hospital board met to tighten visiting hours after 9 p.m. and enforce restrictions. They appointed Dr. Marten Geitz of Odessa as an additional visiting doctor. The group discussed expanding physical therapy services in the health club and reviewed a patient complaint. January showed a profit of $33,958.22 as bills were approved with B. B. Six presiding and members Roach Pittman Fisher Ogden Solomon Manes involved.

The third session in adult education at the high school begins Monday February 23.
