Quiet political week in Andrews County ahead of February 21 bond election for roads. Bond terms set at 3 percent interest. first bond plus interest requires $91,833.33 annual levy, based on $30 million taxable value. Local items note G F Wacker expanding stores and a correction on A M Brown’s precinct 2 candidacy. Postal receipts rose from about $4,000 in 1943 to over $14,000 in 1947.
Andrews postal office shows steady growth in receipts from 1943 to 1947. Receipts rise from 4,791.31 in 1943 to 14,844.72 in 1947, with 1944 and 1945 higher than 1943 and 1946 approaching the 1947 total.
Earnest O. Thompson chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission toured Andrews last week meeting business men, county officials, and hospital doctors. He forecast Andrews would double in population as oil development demands thousands of workers even after drilling ends to support the oil fields.
The Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the Andrews county judgment fining Henry J. Hilliard $100 for alleged liquor law violations. Hilliard was charged with possessing 5 pints of whiskey for sale. Dom Fallowell represented the state and Pat Beene defended.
Mrs Sallie McLaughlin operates B and S Cafe now in the Underwood building and will move to the Andrews Hotel. The cafe will fill the former Justite Jewelry quarters, with enlarged and redecorated space. She has leased the hotel and redesigned the lobby, with access from the west side.
A pair of district games set the Northern half winner for District 7A as Seagraves faces Denver City at 12 30 p m Friday and Andrews meets Seminole Friday night at the local gym. Winners meet the southern half winners for the district championship while both winners and losers play again Saturday night.
Ray Hart plans a Flower and Gift Shop in Andrews once the B and S Cafe vacates the building. Flyers will be circulated three times weekly to advertise the new business.
In North Central Andrews County the Frankel brothers drill No. 10 University and a Champlin No. 1-0 University test in the Shafter Lake Devonian show oil with gas surface indication and a 9,985 foot bottom. The Champlin venture found no oil or gas in Devonian and will test the Wolfcamp. Sinclair Prairie No. 1-155 University reports a three hour test with oil at 60 1/2 barrels in an hour and a half. Shell begins No. 1 Lillie Collins stepout toward Nelson field in West Central Andrews with 11,000 foot target. Phillips No. 5-M University Ellenburger discovery near 10,555 feet shows oil flow after a 62 minute test. The area spans multiple sections in University and surrounding townships as exploration continues.
Superintendent Thomas D Hamilton is among 600 U S educators invited to the United Nations Institute at Lake Success New York He will leave Dallas by Texas Special 4 30 p m to attend the American Association of School Administrators meeting in Atlantic City February 22 to 25 After the convention invited educators will attend the institute with dinners at the Waldorf Astoria and a Greenwich Village luncheon notable ambassadors address the program The first meeting is at United Nations Headquarters Thursday with final session Saturday
Churches in Andrews unite for special services honoring local Boy Scouts and other scouts age youth. More than 40 boys in the local troop, sponsored by the Andrews Lions Club, participate under Scoutmaster R S Dillard Sr and assistant masters Odell Spear, Lawrence Rhodes, James Reed. Scout executive P V Thornson of Midland will speak.
Local grocers report no immediate drop in commodity prices with most shops expecting an eight to ten day delay before any effect is seen. Wholesale meat prices show a five cent per pound cut for bacon while hams and picnic meats hold steady and beef remains unchanged. Retailers foresee a further two to three week lag before reductions appear locally.
Andrews county faces a demand from the State Highway Department to asphalt and gravel the Andrews Kermit highway at an estimated cost of 50000 dollars before it can be taken into state control. Officials have not announced a final county action.
The Andrews Lions Club hosts magician Bob Clark for a February 17 benefit at 7 30 pm in the High School Auditorium. Clark, acclaimed in his field, will perform for about 90 minutes with tricks that dazzle. Admission is 30 and 60 rents. proceeds support community benefit causes.

Odell Spears acts as adviser with Charles Burkett Eugene Brand J Lee Smith J M Farmer and B B Rogers forming a sponsoring committee.
The Wallace Theatre presents a full stage show with a matinee and night performance on Thursday February 19 featuring Ramblin Tommy Scott formerly with the Grand Ole Opry Admission is 50 and 26 cents tax included.
The Andrews Lions Club hosted a well attended football banquet for the Andrews Mustang squad with Mayor Ulmer as toastmaster. Speakers included A L Rhodes Mike Bramblow Pete Jones and Coach Tubb while Elizabeth Meachum led a student choir and sang.
G F Wacker Store of Andrews announces a two day opening sale Friday and Saturday February 13 and 14 with Wallace Morris as manager. Local and out of town staff helped prepare the shop with florescent lighting and window displays for the grand opening.
Edwards and Company were the low bidders for the proposed 250000 road bonds in Andrews County. The issue matures in at least 15 years with a 2.99 percent rate for six years and 3 percent for the remaining nine years. The winning bid was closely matched by others, and the contract becomes binding only if voters authorize the bonds at next Saturday’s election.
A leasing spree in McCarley, east central Andrews county, brought folding money to farmers as several thousand acres were leased by a Tyler firm. Reports say 5 per acre for a five year lease at 50 cent rental, with those leasing including Guy McGill, L. S. Connell, Al McCarley, J. B. Fuson, Jack McCarley, W. S. Hudson, B. W. Galloway, J. A. Fowler, Joe Stewart, and H. H. Emmons.
In the Waco Tribune Hot Shot column Jinx Tucker ponders why Pete Jones appeared in Andrews. He notes Andrews sits far west of Amarillo and suggests Andrews learned of Baylor, placing the onus on Baylor to uncover Andrews' motives.
The Andrews Lions Club voted to sponsor a joint program with the Andrews Study Club and Home Demonstration clubs to plant trees on highways entering Andrews. State official Mr. Pittman will speak at next Tuesday's luncheon to survey routes and outline a beautification plan with blue print site details.
