A dramatic prose scene depicts a towering leader coaxing a crowd to cleanse a slum. Men scrub streets with brooms and soap while women scrub floors and wash windows, inspired by a Kinglike exhortation. The neighborhood awakens to a transformed, gleaming landscape as garbage is hauled away.
Ken Wilson and Clyde Haak of Andrews are named to the advisory committee for the West Texas Education Center media component in Midland. The group will select films and library materials and advise on services and training programs, with Haak and Wilson on the science curriculum sub committee to preview films for the library.
The Mustang cagers beat the Seminole Indians 79 62 to grab undisputed first place in District 2AAA second half with four wins and no losses. Andrews led with 25 fouls, Mark Bader had 23, Tim Pearson 17, and Ray Sharbutt 12 as Rogers and Hatcher fouled out. The crowd grew rowdy as late calls favored the Indians and officials issued a string of fouls and three seconds calls.
Jess Craft, 91 NE 2nd St., announces candidacy for Justice of Peace Precinct 4 Place I in the May Republican primary. A lifelong Republican, he has lived in Andrews ten years after 33 years with Humble Pipe Line Co. Craft pledges impartial law administration and two party system support for better community governance. He is a member of Means Memorial Methodist Church and serves on the Board of Stewards.
Area donors are urged to contribute at an all day blood drive at the Odessa Armory Monday through Wednesday. The event is sponsored by the VEFW American Legion and Red Cross. A challenge has been issued to a group in England donating blood to the Viet Cong.
The county court ordered an election for Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Place 1 this year after an attorney general ruling changed election parity. Owen Doggett, last year’s JP Place 1, was appointed to finish the term until January 1, 1969. The court also authorized bids for one mobil x ray unit, transfer of 8500 dollars to Youth Recreation, and dated Evelyn Stewart as temporary in the tax assessor collectors office effective February 2.
The city council in regular session approved an election for April 2 to fill Place 3, currently Gene Demmler, and the mayor’s seat. Four street lights were authorized to illuminate the Prairie Dog town for the tourist season, and Ira Lee Brannan was named auditor for 1968 69.
Members from across the state gather in Andrews for the statewide AAUW conference. The local branch hosted a luncheon yesterday and a supper for the board, with a tea in Monahan scheduled Sunday to honor the group.
Dr. Bill Luper told Andrews Rotary Club that heart disease begins in most by age 21 and outlined global and local advances. He cited risk factors such as obesity smoking fatty diets diabetes high blood pressure and heredity and noted the Permian General coronary care unit. He discussed heart transplant operations and prevention as the best cure.
Four members of Boy Scout Troop 119 will receive Eagle Scout awards at Means Memorial Methodist Church during the morning service. Recipients include Tom Brown, a senior patrol leader and Andrews High School freshman. Stanley Scott, a fellow freshman. Kenneth Ulmer, a sophomore. and Jerry Tochterman, another freshman. Awards are presented by Buffalo Trail Council officials and Scout Master Ernie Wilke, with mothers participating as usual.
