Sheriff, Attorney General, and two named judges traveled to Aus Monday through Wednesday for a law enforcement session called by the Attorney General.
A Sunday gathering at the new church site saw the Presbytery Commission install Rev. Frank Crown as pastor. The out-of-town panel led by Joe M. Brown questioned the pastor. Lewis Water Street preached. Exe Coon charged the congregation. Eleven members joined the church that night, ten by transfer and one by profession of faith and baptism.
Postmistress M Burkett announced general delivery mail windows will stay open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily except weekends and holidays. Saturday service keeps money order window noon and general delivery parcel post and stamp windows close at 1:00 pm. A new general delivery case will speed service for patrons.
In Andrews County Texas crude oil camp two new wildcats are announced with multiple reentries. Spotted locations include No 1 Marshall west of Andrews and No 2 Frank Williamson north of Shafter Lake, while reentry No 1 M A Thornberry is southwest of Andrews with 6 800 feet planned. Other tests report 180 feet of oil on a central Andrews Wolfcamp drillstem test and a Gulf Oil Fusselman test yielding 18 000 cubic feet of gas daily.
De Witt Weaver addressed Lions here Tuesday at a regular noon luncheon, saying Texas Tech coach talks to Lions like the people and athletes of the South Plains too well to leave Tech.
Ted L. Phillips, 22, formally became head of the First Christian Church here, succeeding John R. McDonald who returns to Fort Worth for further study. Phillips came from Tulsa Oklahoma and the Memorial Christian Church after five years as Student pastor at Mannford Christian Church in Oklahoma. He and his wife Rochelle are former Tulsa East Side Christian Church members. Bud Sherrod accompanied the Texas Tech mentor on his trip and Weaver recounted a campus visit anecdote about Arkansas coach prospects.
In Andrews a joint banquet of school trustees and oil company tax reps heard reports on the growing pupil load and the need for more teachers and classrooms. Dr Bascom Hayes projected 1960 needs of 320000 more pupils, 15000 teachers, and 350 million for new buildings statewide.
The Andrews Mutual Concert association opened its three spring programs with Philippe Entremont, 20, a French pianist on a U S tour. He performed Chopin and Liszt among other works and was guest of honor at a coffee after the recital. Season tickets aided music students. local sponsors supported the event.
Andrews high seniors stage a three act comedy Meet Corliss Archer by F Hugh Herbert on Feb 17 18 at the high school auditorium A matinee Thursday at 2 pm and a 8 pm Friday performance directed by Mrs Maxine Finch Miss Montrell Cox stars as Corliss with a large cast and stage crew providing entertainment based on a diary causing misimpressions about Mr Archer and Dexter.
Judge G C Olsen will be in Andrews Friday for an all day session of District Court here. He will hear cases and conduct the court in the local courthouse as part of a routine judicial circuit.
Board of Trustees Tuesday night awarded two year contracts to M. O. Woolam J Lee Smith Vernon Payne J B Youngblood and Glenn Frazier to reinforce long range programming. The meeting also approved an IBM tax office system and a new payroll machine and outlined emergency plans for upcoming fall needs. Superintendent Roach projected 1955 census results showing 23 additional teachers needed for 2 154 students and 508 junior high students ready next fall with principals to propose staff hires.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Arkansas City for Robert Franklin Hubbard a 50 year old roughneck with Cowan Drilling Company who was killed Sunday in a rig accident seven miles south and three miles west of Andrews A traveling block and hook fell on Hubbard No one else was injured Survivors include his widow a son in the U S Navy a daughter Carolyn Odessa his mother Mrs Carrie Hubbard of Kansas three brothers and two sisters
The local Red Cross chapter invites applications for a standard First Aid course taught by Mrs. M. F. Seay. The class will be held tentatively during the first week of March at the High School. Open to both men and women.
