A humorous column forecasts a spring shortage of kissin babies as forty odd candidates roam town. It weighs primary twists, party moves, and the wisdom of handshakes over a busy political season. Census figures released this week show Andrews County population at 12 728 with Illys city at 1 535 and rural count down to 1 535. The county’s population has fallen each year since the 1960 peak of 13 450, while the city tally remains above the 1960 federal count but below last year’s school census.
A 14 year old boy was shot in a toolshed near Andrews while handling a .22 rifle. Gary Murrell, son of Mr and Mrs Van Murrell, remained in critical condition with a brain wound as investigators consider the shooting accidental. The incident follows two prior family tragedies.
Kermit Yellow Jackets defeated the Andrews Mustangs 66-64 in overtime to climb to third in District 2-AAA. Sparks and Deckard led late action, with key free throws and a final set shot by Sanders missing as the game ended 66-64.
G. D. Arkie Reed, a local trucking contractor, announces candidacy for Commissioner of Precinct 2 in the Democratic Primary on May 5. A 45 year old resident of Andrews County for 18 years, he lives with wife Mildred at 909 NW 6th St and has two children Frances Myers of Brawley California and Paul, a freshman at Southern Methodist University. Reed came to Andrews as a welder for Phillips Petroleum Co and helped build the North Fullerton Gasoline plant.
Three Andrews girls placed high at the Interscholastic League twirling competition in Idalou. Mickey Gillen, six, won first in twirling and strutting and captured the trophy in a final with other first-place winners. Carol Crawley earned a first in twirling, Jeanine Jarrett took second in strutting and fourth in Miss Majorette, with Gillen third in Miss Majorette. They were accompanied by Mrs. Jarrett and Mrs. Gillen and study under Mrs. Jan Bilhartz.
The Andrews Pony League will elect new officers at 7 30 p m Friday in the courthouse basement meeting room. President Bill Rowlett urges parents of 13 and 14 year olds to attend and join the league. Parents new to Pony League, especially those with boys moving up from Little League, are invited to learn about the league’s operations.
C. E. Carruth the mayor of Andrews was elected a director of the Texas Municipal League region four at a meeting held Tuesday night.
Jim Herzberger has been elected president of the National Little League. Other officers include O. H. Sanders as vice president H. P. Armstrong as player agent and Chief Long as secretary treasurer. A $25 contribution to the national LI foundation was approved and a committee to coordinate by laws was named with George Carruth Bobby Jacobs John Beilue and R C Seal.
The sheriff reports January’s petty thefts and forgery cases include four stolen cars all recovered with three charged. Traffic violations count 33 with 13 accidents injuring nine. Police recorded eight prowler or vandalism cases, two DWIs, 12 drunkenness arrests, a stolen auto recovery, 91 animals picked up and 22 dog tags issued along with 28 bicycle registrations. Corporation court fines totaled 612.00. Sheriff staff logged 15 873 miles patrolling county roads and oil fields.
January juvenile cases totaled 19 per Marshall Cooper juvenile and probation officer. One boy was placed on probation for car theft. 16 boys and two girls were counseled and released. Referrals included unlawful entry truancy runaway mischief and liquor with youths aged 10 to 17. Most lived with both parents. three families were divorced or separated.
The county prints the largest Republican and Democratic slates in history for Andrews voters as filing closes. Seven county posts draw 31 candidates with three judicial and four legislative races, including incumbents and new hopefuls.
Charlie Burkett of Andrews announces his run for county clerk in the May 5 Democratic primary. He has resided in Andrews County for about 37 years and pledges to serve residents now and in the county’s future.
Roe Price, 42, a long time An drews County resident since 1933, announced his bid for county commissioner of precinct two. He has lived in the area for 29 years with a brief absence for work and service. Price's background includes ranch work, construction, and oil fields. He worked in oil until January 1960 when injured, then spent a year recuperating before becoming deputy sheriff, a role he currently holds. He is married with two children.
William Bert Smith of Mawson and Smith General Insurance announces candidacy for Andrews County Commissioner Precinct 4 in the Democratic Primary on May 5. He has lived in Andrews seven years from Mineral Wells, resides with his wife at 807 NW Avenue A, serves in the Christian faith, is a World War II veteran, and a member of the American Legion of Andrews. He has been licensed in insurance for about 22 years and promises to address county needs.
