Andrews experiences a real building boom with new structures everywhere and more planned. Business sites price up to 2000 dollars with limited availability while residential lots fetch 150 to 500 dollars. residents and firms seek space, prompting talk of zoning and building permit rules to protect churches hospitals and schools from unsafe structures.
Roy Cocanougher of City Grocery and Market announces he sold the business to G D Tate of Denver City but has returned to operate City Grocery this week. Tate has returned to Denver City to teach in the public schools there. Cocanougher will continue to run the store non cash and invites old customers as well as new patrons to shop with the same courteous service and quality merchandise.
Pat Beene county attorney and Frank Price commissioner of precincts left for El Paso Tuesday to confer with the Civil Aeronautics Administration and engineer Church on locating the Andrews airport. Church will return to Andrews February 19 to choose a site.
Austin notes a rare surplus with the general revenue fund at 18.4 million and total cash across 116 state funds reaching 68.97 million. Officials credit higher revenues, tax receipts, and surplus spillover from legal allocations as factors in the favorable position.
Mrs Margery Jackson accepted a position with Texas Electric Service Company in Anders and began work Friday. Miss Norma Jean Davidson, with Texas Electric since last August, resigns on the 20th to enroll at Baylor University in March.
Jim Underwood will serve as Phillips Petroleum wholesale dealer in Andrews County and open a new business across Hughes Tool Co. on Eunice Highway. Construction includes a metal warehouse, office, and storage tanks with materials hauled soon. His brother Joe Underwood will assist. they will offer Phillips gasoline oils tires and merchandise nationwide.
Texas Tech in Lubbock arranged housing for more than 1,000 veterans who applied for admission for the semester starting February 1. W. T. Gaston, Tech business manager, said housing was found through dormitory room reallocations, using barracks and nearby facilities, rooms in private homes, and open wings for married veterans. Government and civic groups assisted with beds and materials, while President and Mrs Whyburn donated two rooms in a campus wing to veterans.
Emma John Blake daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Blake of Santa Anna married Stafford G. Helm Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Stafford G. Helm of Abilene at Santa Anna Methodist Church. The pair plan a wedding trip to Indian Lodge in the Davis Mountains and Albuquerque New Mexico and will reside at 801 West Michigan Midland Texas. Mrs. Helms taught at Midland High School and Mr. Helm works as a field representative for Midlad district of Mid-Continent Oil Well Supply Co.

The court met with Jim Parker Billy Wyche Hillary Bedford and Geo Ratliff to finalize a right of way deal for the Andrews Kermit Road. The Ratliff Bedford tract will be paid 10 per acre plus 100 per mile for grass lease while fencing is not required and cattle losses are county responsibility. Parker and Wyche tracts will be fenced with two wells to supply water. The agreement covers from the Winkler County line to south of Thornberry Ranch Headquarters securing more than half the route. The rest of the right of way will be pursued rapidly.
The T. D. Hamilton home hosted a bridal shower Thursday evening for the former Mary Owens. Co hosts included Mrs. Pat Beene and others. Guests were welcomed by a white leather guest book with lavender iris and yellow accents. Punch and cake matched the flower colors and 33 guests attended.
Pfc. Jack W. Carruth of Andrews Texas is among 2111 Army veterans returning to the United States aboard the USS Eastland which sailed from Yokohama Japan January 1 and is slated to dock in Seattle January 28. The Eastland is an attack transport that supported amphibious operations from Guadalcanal in 1942 to Japan’s occupation.
The Pacific coast area including the northwest states contains the nation's densest and most extensive forested regions, contributing to vast timber resources and ecological significance.
Farmers in Andrews County are told there will be no cotton crop insurance for 1946. County and state committee decisions on January 31 1946 set the plan. PMA conservation signups include Bill Wyche Hilary G Bedford and Ratliff from Midland and George D Norman of Lamesa.

District Judge Henry Russell notified H. T. Wilson of his appointment as Andrews County Auditor. Wilson, manager of Elliot and Waldron Abstract Co., will take the oath after bond approval by the Commissioners Court. The move follows county tax valuation surpassing 15 million dollars and Wilson’s prior public service.
The Midland girls volleyball team won three of five games against the local squad at Andrews gym on Thursday night. The home team rallied to take the third and fourth games but could not clinch the deciding fifth. Notable players for Andrews were Helen Honey and June Ward.
Miss Louise Downing returns from California where she worked for North American Defense Plant and enrolls in Draughon s Business College at Abilene Texas.
Sun Oil CoNos 2 Martin in Andrews County reports a drilled test at 6 790 to 7 050 feet with 4 346 feet of gas cut mud and oil and 368 feet clean oil recovered. Prospects extend toward 10 000 feet to reach Ordovician. Atlantic Refining Co No1 University near Crane County shows slight oil trace in Silurian test at 9038 to 9192 feet as drilling continues.
Andrews Mustangs beat Midland Bulldogs 33 to 22 on Thursday night, capturing their first-ever win after three meetings this year. Charles Pinnell and Red Smyers led with nine points each, Hudgens added eight, while Collins, Stewart, Nixon, Young, and McAuley contributed for the Mustangs.
Mrs Homer Rentz, who has been visiting her family at Novice, returned Thursday to Andrews. Her brother Jim Anderson accompanied her for a visit here.
Mrs Chris tine Hoffman of Andrews welcomes a son born February 6 weighing 5 pounds 3 ounces. The baby is named James Ronald Hoffmann.
