Geologist Ed explains how water sources in Midland and surrounding counties come from small streams and drainage channels feeding main rivers. A series of traffic crashes this week injured two people, one seriously, in the city and surrounding area. Causes include fog one mile north of Florey, a stop sign violation at Southwest and Third, and a left turn by James Kemper. Damages range from minor to substantial with multiple drivers cited for violations.
In Andrews two decades ago, over 500 electric dynamite caps were stolen from a DS&R construction magazine three quarters of a mile west of the yard on the Odessa highway. Superintendent Choate reported bicycle tracks and footprints near the site and indicated boys beat caps with rocks while whittling the caps and lead wire. The caps are dangerous if exploded and the wire is paper wrapped marked 12 ft lead wire.
The Lions Club annual Amateur Show is set for Monday at 8 pm in the high school auditorium. Bob Montgomery and Brodie Hutcheson head preparations and seek more acts. Tickets cost 25 cents for students and 75 cents for adults. Proceeds fund glasses for underprivileged children plus other civic projects.
A large group of townspeople voted to organize a county chapter of the American Cancer Society at the Community building. Miss Nancy James of Midland outlined the society’s functions and education push, with committees named for by laws, nominations, medical work, and others. Dr. Ramsey urged attendance for the February 12 meeting.
Andrews Mustangs aim for their first 2-AAA win as Brownfield Cubs visit for a 6:30 p.m. prelim. Monahans nips Andrews 47-45 with Don Adams 14 and Curtis Hart 12 leading the Mustangs. Jerry Mobley scores 16 for Monahans. B-team also tight 43-40 loss.
The Andrews A team lost to Denver City 35 27 in Denver City Tuesday night. The Andrews B team defeated Denver City 43 38 to split the doubleheader.
Ed Reed a Midland geologist was employed by the Andrews Water Board to map the Red Bed formation in Block 4 Northeast Andrews and Blocks 1 2 and 9 Southeast Andrews. The plan includes three stages with initial topography survey at up to 2500 and uses data from oil company shot hole logs to guide further testing and possible water production.
Loretta Webb of St. Louis a Red Cross disaster expert will conduct a four day Red Cross Disaster Institute February 11 15 at the local chapter. The school will train committee members on duties if a disaster strikes in the county.
The annual census shows Andrews public schools with 3030 students, up 580 from 1956 and 908 from 1955, including 2985 white and 45 colored school age children. Pre-school total is 1690, county population 12588, city residents 10519.
Everett Soloman started as administrator of Permian General Hospital on February 1. He arrives from Childress after seven and a half years as hospital administrator and previously worked at University Hospital in Oklahoma City. Soloman plans improvements, praises current facilities, and notes efforts to hire a new director of nurses. He is active in Rotary Club, Elks, Masonic Lodge, and the Methodist Church.
The Andrews County News reports a unique Miss Valentine of 1957 contest opening today with sixteen local girls from high and junior high vying for first second and third place prizes. Voting runs from 9 am to noon Wednesday with ballots by depositing a contestant’s photo in the sponsor store’s Valentine box.
Art Hollenbeck 66 owner of Arts Cafe remained in critical condition at Permian General Hospital after suffering a vito cranial hemorrhage shortly after admission on Saturday night.
At the monthly School Advisory Council meeting the discussion covered early marriages among students, permanent student records, and the high school curriculum. A committee led by Luther Reynolds will evaluate area school policies on early marriages, with members Jack Kane Frank Stickney Mrs L Z Brown and J Lee Smith.
