Texas Governor Beauford Jester will appear in a five minute radio address from the Governor’s mansion in Austin as Boy Scouts of the Buffalo Trail Council mark National Scout Anniversary Week February 6 to 12. The 30 minute program Friday February 6 at 4 30 P M will air on eight stations across a 15 county area from Pecos to Sweetwater. The broadcast also notes the Buffalo Trail Council’s 25th anniversary and the opening of the 60 000 acre Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch in the Davis Mountains with remarks by Hyman Wren president Rex Palmer and other leaders.
The News announces Milton Ramsey as a candidate for re election as County Judge of Andrews County. Sam Smith is named as a candidate for County and District Clerk with a formal announcement to follow.
Ben Keith son of Mr and Mrs John Keith left the Veterans Hospital at Amarillo after an appendectomy. He is now convalescing at his parents home east of Andrews.
The Lions sponsored football banquet will be held tonight at the school cafeteria honoring the Mus tang football squad. Mayor J A Ulmer will be toast master with B B Rogers and M O Woolam handling tickets. Mike Brumbelow, ex T C U coach and now Mississippi State scout, will attend. Movies of Southwestern conference and bowl games will be shown. Attendance expected is 75.
A Tile Council of America report shows Andrews County farm property exceeding 5 801 000 and rural homes statewide in peak condition. Since 1940 farm incomes and values rose with electrification and modern amenities expanding, with 59 percent of farm homes now lit by electricity and over 32 percent with running water.
Floyd Peacock tax collector told Tuesday that car owners must present a title and last year’s registration to purchase 1948 plates. Out of state owners must apply for Texas title and register by April 1 1948, with February 1 to April 1 as two months on 1947 registration. Early registration avoids last minute rush at the Collector’s Office.
The Lamesa Band will be the feature attraction at the Lions monthly fete in the school cafeteria at 7 30 PM. About 75 Lions and wives are expected to attend with new members to be initiated. The group is known for music comedy and Spike Jones antics.
The March of Dimes drive in Andrews County totaled 720.17 with county chairwoman Mrs. Carl Ham and city chairwoman Mrs. Virgil Reed. Wallace Theater contributions 150.61, Humble Camp dance 200, coin boxes 75.35, school children 142.25, and local businesses about 200. Poll tax receipts and exemptions hit 1 428 and 72 respectively, totaling 1 500 for 1947, with 1 000 and 24 in 1946. Estimated population around 6 000 to 7 500. Lions Club and local merchants promoted payments.
M. D. Woolam District Governor of 2-T-2 leaves Thursday for Dallas to attend the State Board of District Governors of Texas Lions Clubs meeting Thursday through Saturday. Lions International President Smith will also attend the Dallas session.
Eight contestants have registered for Amateur night at the Wallace Theatre. Entry closes February 10 as management urges entrants to test their talents for a potential on air or stage opportunity.

Mr. and Mrs. O. FE. Comer announce the birth of a daughter named Lynda Kaye on February 3 weighing eight pounds. The couple praise the event as a joyful addition to their family. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Underwood also announce a daughter born February 3 named Ann Lu Cette with no weight listed.
Mr and Mrs E L Sue announce the birth of a daughter on February 4 weighing seven pounds four ounces. The newborn is named Donna Elaine.
Texas Highway Commission hearings show gaps narrowing on the Broadway to the Big Bend route with Andrews and Dawson counties seeking state help for road construction. Andrews asks state takeover of the Andrews Winkler County line road, while Dawson County requests $200,000 in combined bond and state funds to build about 30 miles of hard surface roads. County authorities report plans to secure right of way deeds and aim for contracts to be let in April as work may begin soon.
Lubbock attorney Ralph Brock 32 announces his candidacy for the Texas Senate from the 30th District. Brock, a former county attorney and Navy veteran, rose from farm roots to law degree at the University of Texas. He lists extensive civic service and varied early jobs and notes the district spans 24 counties with an estimated 90 000 potential voters.
Chas. W. Roberts announces candidacy for County Judge in Andrews County with support from friends. He reflects on wartime terms and vows unselfish service, stating he will publish his platform later and seeks Democratic Primary votes. Mrs. Carl Ham and Mrs. L. E. Rhodes visit Odessa on Tuesday.
Dr Geo W Cox state health officer says influenza remains highly infectious and widespread this season. He urges avoiding coughing crowds and ill people, using personal towels, washing hands, sleeping well, and ventilating rooms. Convalescents should resume activity gradually to prevent further infections.
E E Taylor announces candidacy for Sheriff Tax Assessor and Collector of Andrews county subject to the Democratic primary on July 24. He is 35 born and raised in West Texas married with four children and runs a barber shop in Andrews. He has prior shop ownership in several Texas towns and seeks voter support, promising to meet each voter before the primary.
Andrews and Big Spring residents served by Shafter Lake field faced no gas shortages during the recent cold snap. In contrast Odessa Midland Stanton Lamesa and Lubbock suffered acute shortages closing schools and businesses. Empire Southern Gas diverted gas to Midland Odessa lines. Andrews saw stable pressure and adequate supply.
Mr and Mrs Chris B Quante have purchased the A L Hood residence in Andrews moving from Brownfield Texas.
Dick Conlee of Graford Texas plans a new grocery and meat store in Andrews near Mineral Wells. The shop aims to open around February 14 to 16 and will offer a full grocery and meat line.
The Texas Railroad Commission is poised to decide on a 300 barrel allowable for Sinclair Prairie Oil on two wells at the Skelly University lease 173 in Andrews county. Paul McDermott urged the No 2 well shows stronger potential than No 1, citing an engineer affidavit. Gulf's Stanley Hornsby protested the evidence but was overruled and the record remains open for possible further protest.
In extreme Southwest Andrews County Pure Oil and Humble Oil report a major Silurian flow from Ellenburger step out No. 3 E A K Cowden. The well produced 75 barrels in 10 minutes through a 1 4 inch choke, indicating potential 450 barrels per hour and up to 10 800 barrels per day. The zone lies at 8532 40 feet in a cavernous section, with a 7 inch casing cemented at 8503 feet and total depth around 8610 feet. Production tests on multiple zones planned, with prior unofficial flows up to 1 000 to 1 500 barrels per hour. A second Cowden well yielded 766 01 barrels per day potential at 9 908 10 137 feet with gas oil ratio 458 1. Multiple nearby Ellenburger tests and wildcat attempts continued in Andrews County as Gulf Oil and Phillips Petroleum pursue Devonian and Ellenburger prospects.
