A stove explosion caused a fire Monday at 11 30 am two and half miles northeast of Andrews destroying the four room residence of L C Downing. Fire department arrived too late to save the building though some clothing and household goods were saved. No injuries reported.
Mrs H M Heath of the Heath Heel traveled to Vernon last week as her granddaughter suffered pneumonia and asthma. Before returning home she was summoned to Sweetwater where Mrs Dan Smith underwent an operation. Heath then brought home Mr Smith's three children while their mother stayed at the hospital.
Miks Whitcomb attended the wedding of Earnest Hawkins and Margaret Ashley last Sunday. Miss Whitcomb sang Aways and Because. The ceremony was held at the First Baptist Church of Lamesa with Texas Tech football star of this year on the proom.
Mrs. H. M. Oswalt has accepted an appointment as postmistress at Florey Texas. She was formerly a clerk in the Andrews post office. Mrs. D. C. Blankenship of Inglewood California is visiting her sister, Mrs. tl MM Mixon and friends. Mr. and Mrs. EF W. Holder transacted business in Lubbock over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCary of Odessa visited their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Hooten over the weekend. Homer Rentz left by plane for Houston Friday.
A shower for the L. C. Downings whose home was lost last week will be held at the Methodist church after Prayer Meeting Wednesday night. Rev. Raymond Van Zandt urged gifts to the parsonage to help with household goods and clothing.
Mrs Chas Thorpe entertained January 31 at Humble Recreation Hall with a 4th birthday party for her daughter Mikey. A Valentine motif featured crystal candleholders and a miniature bride doll as table center, with refreshments for a group of children and accompanying mothers.
Robert S. Calvert named by Governor Beauford H. Jester to fill the late George H. Sheppard’s term as Texas State Comptroller. Calvert, born April 27 1892 in McLennan County, served 18 years in the office including as chief clerk. He oversees tax collections and state payments totaling hundreds of millions yearly.
The 6666 Home Demonstration Club met at Mrs. W. H. Weaver's home on Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. D. F. Cheat presiding. Co. Agent Hattie G. Owens led a sewing machine cleaning and adjustment demonstration. A refreshment plate followed for Mrs. Owens, eight members, a visitor, and the hostess.
The old Dunn Hotel in Andrews is being dismantled by Hugh Holderman and crew. The building, original by Clarence Scharbauer for J. E. Shunate, changed hands in 1909 for 1250 dollars. Rumors say a modern structure will replace the Dunn Hotel as its social and business legacy fades.
Andrews 4-H boys met January 27 at the Junior High to organize demonstrations for 4-H. 83 members signed up to showcase beef calf feeding capons poultry laying flocks gardens crops and lamb feeding. Max Williams received the gold star pin and a garden medal for top county demonstration.
The Fifth Anniversary of Rev. Eugene Brand's pastorate at the First Baptist Church of Andrews will be celebrated Sunday. Since his call five years ago the church grew from 265 to 590 members, with 473 in Sunday school and property value rising from 8000 to 75000 dollars. The 1948 offering reached 23223 dollars, and the church added a new auditorium, home improvements, and new lots to expand the property.
The marriage rites of James Anson Coughran and Stella Thompson were performed at the groom’s home at 9 A M January 31 1949 with Rev Eugene Brand of the First Baptist Church reading the ceremony. The bride wore a black faille dress with a red carnation corsage. Attendants included the groom’s daughter Ruby Coughran with Rex McCarley as best man. Guests included Pat Beene Ray Hart L D Hargrove W W Walker Buck Walker Nell Floyd Opal Her ring and Ruth Powell. After a brief honeymoon the couple will reside in Andrews.
Farmers consider feeding hay to cattle amid northward herd losses and a tight breeding stock. An Agents Report Back Page note hints at plans to ease shortages.
Local Red Cross met January 20 in the commissioners court room to plan for the March 1 fund drive. Dr. Richard Ramsey was named Fund Chairman and Knox Irwin Disaster Chairman. Attendees included Mrs. A. C. Mize, Mrs. W. J. Harris, Mrs. B. F. Seay, Mrs. T. C. Anderson, Mrs. Charles Roberts Jr., Dr. and Mrs. Richard Ramsey, Mr. and Mrs. Max Ramsey, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Ulmer, Mrs. C. E. Sealy, and Mrs. Knox Irwin. Helen Anderson resigned as social service worker. Next meeting is Monday at 7:30 p.m. at J. A. Ulmer’s home. Public invited.
Two Andrews high school students, Byford Sealy and David Moore, are members of the 90 piece North Texas State College Concert Band. The tour includes performances at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference in Galveston and the Victoria Music Festival. Conducted by Maurice McAdow the band has earned top ratings in state and national contests.
The News retracts an earlier claim that no one was injured in the Hudson crash involving Mrs. Howard Glanton. Doctors reported three fractured vertebrae after hospital exams at Andrews and Abilene, with the patient dismissed after promising to report there.
The tax collector's office reports 905 poll taxes paid and 23 exemptions. Estimated voting strength is about 1200, roughly 700 fewer than last year.
A Senate resolution by Sen Kilmer B Corbin of Lamesa asks Congress to declare January 30 the birthday of Franklin D Roosevelt a national holiday. The measure was unanimously adopted and sent to the House with copies to the President Vice President Speaker and all Senators and Representatives.
About 500 Lions and Lionesses gathered in the Ector County Auditorium for a Melvin Jones birthday celebration hosted by the Odessa Lions Club with members from Andrews and neighboring towns. The event featured music, scenes on Melvin Jones, a square dance, and remarks by Lions leaders, with attendees listed from Andrews.
Amos Vinings news stand and bus station relocates to the former Andrews Masonic Hall site, now with ample room. The shop carries multiple daily papers including Daily Oklahoma, and owner Mr Vinning reports rising business as locals adapt, with brief notes on paper delivery from Oklahoma City to Hobbs.
In the Knox Irwin Jr home the Tuesday Study Club met on February 1 with a program on International Relations. Mr T D Hamilton Sr spoke on United Nations and Mrs Max Goldsmith discussed Communism Inside U S A. Mrs A C Lively presented Government of the Soviet Union. The business session was led by President Mrs B H Pinnell and a Valentine salad plate was served by hostesses Mrs Irwin and Mrs R C McNett to club members.
Second producer in Shafter Ellenburger area proves up oil on two drillstem tests. The first at 11,660 to 11,737 feet yielded 2,160 feet of 10 gravity oil with gas surfaced in 1 hour 20 minutes. A deeper test at 11,737 to 11,762 feet produced 7,770 feet of clean oil with gas in 23 minutes and 3,000 cubic feet per day gas. Humble Oil reports a new pay in the Dollarhide field as drill tests continue near the Ellenburger.
Mary Elizabeth Weaver and Ray Jackson Foster married January 29 at the First Baptist parsonage in Hobbs New Mexico. Rev. Keating officiated in the presence of family. The couple plans to live in Lubbock until June graduation.
