Manhunt Ends in Hatchet Murders Arrest in West Texas
Local officers and several counties joined a manhunt that concluded Thursday at noon when Ike Toler of Yoakum County arrested W. C. Brown, 2, a paroled convict, for the hatchet murders of Mrs. Cora Smith, 71, of Brownfield, and her daughter Mrs. Quinley Dunlap, 40, of California. Brown confessed to the district attorney and was turned over to Sheriff Price of Terry County for confinement.

Located five miles north and one mile west of Andrews, three offsets are staked for drilling soon. A letter from Harold Roberts with the 112th Cavalry at Arnare Beach on New Brittain recalls Lt. Knox Irwin and Pfc. Weaver Embree visiting him recently. Many friends remain missing. Roberts notes it is God’s will that he survives. The 112th Cavalry, a dismounted Texas unit, diverted at Arnare Beach on December 15 and suffered heavy losses as Japanese defenses opened fire, with Lt. Hare of Dallas killed while leading the landing.
