Car Crash Leaves Man With Facial Injuries on North Main

A passenger, Paul McNeal Andrews, suffered severe facial lacerations when his car struck a parked vehicle in the 400 block of North Main late Thursday. The Duncan car, driven by Mrs W C Duncan of Andrews, hit the rear of K S Fariss’s parked car. A second wreck at N W 3rd and Avenue A caused no injuries. Douglas Gaines notes total damage. Green cited for failure to yield right of way and no driver’s license.

Language Forum Criticism of Freshman English Courses

Board Hears 3 Proposals for Andrews Language Arts

Dr. Robert Carlsen presented three recommendations to the board of trustees after a Friday workshop. He urged a detailed K–12 course of study, a uniform testing program for all grades, and using the high school as a community center for adult education. The board postponed action pending a full written report.

Services Held For Merrill Grider In Andrews

Funeral services for Merrill John Grider 54 were conducted at 4 p m Friday in the Singleton Funeral Home Chapel. Grider a Pan American Petroleum Co. pumper for 21 years died after a stroke earlier in the week. He moved to Andrews 13 years ago from Tulsa Oklahoma and was a Kansas native and Christian Church member. Burial was in Andrews Cemetery with Pan American employees as honorary pallbearers. Survivors include his wife Pearl two sons Jim and Calvin a daughter Dan Houston two sisters Esca Tandy Inez Davis and seven grandchildren. Arrangements by Singleton Funeral Home.

Mustangs Over Eagles In 77-52 High School Bout

Andrews Mustangs defeated Pecos Eagles 77 to 52 with four Mustangs in double figures led by Emory Smith 15 and Darrell Lawson 13. Pecos countered with Larry Lumpkin 20 and Junior Haynes 15 as the hosts built a 22-10 first quarter lead and pulled away through the night despite a second quarter technical foul.

Late Rally Lifts Andrews County Poll Tax Total

A late surge of poll tax purchases increased Andrews County voting strength to 2828 for 1963. Officials counted 2503 poll tax receipts and 325 exemptions, down 299 from 1961’s off year. Voter interest and county races boosted eligible voters to 4223, with local elections for two councilmen a mayor and two school board members.

West Texas counties named emergency distress area

Andrews and several West Texas counties were designated an emergency area by the Farmers Home Administration to qualify farmers for emergency federal loans. The action, prompted by drought heavy rains and insect infestation, follows earlier distress declarations for Gaines Dawson and Borden counties.

Dixie Maltsberger in Serious Condition After Wreck

Friends report Dixie Maltsberger in serious condition after a wreck Friday night near Lamesa. He had earlier killed his wife with a shotgun accident while cleaning it, and visited her grave before crashing into a cemetery wall.
