In Andrews the writer salutes the faithful few who funded and built the county wide school district, courts, library, hospital, and other improvements. Newcomers are urged to contribute and leave something for those who follow as progress rests on yesterday’s efforts and today’s volunteers.
The News announces the completion of the new Andrews Frankel City telephone directory. It invites readers to hang it by the phone for quick calls and notes operators will appreciate the time saved.
The article contrasts fears of federal government ownership with a Lions Club committee’s plan for a new golf course site. They favor a parcel between the airport and the park near the school block, noting it could centralize community projects and allow park expansion.
The senior girl scouts held a regular Wednesday session with 12 members present. Guest speaker Joyce Alexander, Superintendent of Nurses at Andrews Hospital, lectured on nurse qualifications and needs. The group plans a unit in hospital work.
The March of Dimes drive reports $1025.50 raised by Thursday with coffee sales totaling $270 and community events contributing. Miss Janie Jackson was acclaimed Band Sweetheart for 1949 50 at a concert in the high school auditorium Thursday evening. Bill Tighe presented her with a bouquet of flowers as the bands played. About seven hundred attendees heard solos by Rex Perrin Mary Nell Sparks and Joe Peoples. Dorothy Post directs the junior band Everett Maxwell leads the senior band. Neighboring towns Kermit Seminole Stanton Jal were represented. The senior band will play for the district teachers convention in Midland on March 16.
At 1900 hours Andrews county shows 1523 poll tax receipts and 66 exemptions issued with an estimated 250 elderly voters not taxed. Total voting strength reaches 1839, compared with Odessa’s 48 250 population and county totals near 50 000, implying about 7945 to 8000 residents per voter based on tax receipts.
The Mustangs dropped a 37 36 semi final loss to Odessa Bronchos in the Odessa tournament. Joe How ell hit the free throw for the winning margin, Don Floyd scored 12 for the Mustangs and Jack Smith had 13 in other games. Andrews beat Midland 45 29 and Denver City 44 37. Floyd earned all tournament honors for his play.
The bearded House of David touring team performs at Andrews High School gym February 13 under the Andrews Quarterback Club. They come off a Crane engagement and tour Texas with comedy and strong basketball led by Bobby Roth and 7-3 pivot man Giant Moose Ludka. Key players include Frank Mekules and Bud Scott. Admission is $1 for adults and 50 cents for students with proceeds aiding the high school clock project.
Taxpayers would pay three cents more per $100 value to fund five new rooms at the Junior High, a new shop building, and a 1400 seating capacity gym. The election is Saturday from 7 A M to 7 P M in the courthouse, with N E Watkins as election judge. If approved, a property valued at $1000 would rise to $10.30 in tax, under the plan, assuming operating costs stay the same.
A capacity crowd watched the Andrews Study Club hosted game between the Out Side ladies and teachers and Ted Ellis, 19 to 10. Imogene Wolf led scorers with ten points, followed by Lillie Harris six and Grace Braswell three as over $63 flowed to the March of Dimes kitty.
Forty one Andrews boys receive football jackets for the 1949 season. Seniors on the A squad totaled ten, juniors eleven, B squad eighteen, with two managers. Names listed include Wade Mitchell and Wayne Graham among seniors, plus junior and B team recipients. Also noted are visitors Mr. and Mrs. O B Lenon of Colorado Springs visiting their daughter Mrs Clyde Kioam.
Patterson of Odessa is named the first district 5-A football commissioner. He will oversee official assignments for all district games while remaining in his role as Lamar Elementary principal. Each school will contribute 35 dollars for operating costs, with coaches submitting approved officials for a master chart.
A 1949 report by Pritchard & Abbott to Judge Milton Ramsey shows Andrews County drilling 238 wells with five dry holes, led by Dollarhide field with 54 wells and total county production at 33,421,757 barrels below the 1948 peak. Gregg, Ector, and Rusk counties top county standings.
District Judge G. C. Olsen flew from Dallas to Midland then Andrews in fog delayed travel to oversee the trial of Helen Wells Russell versus Fred Slater et al. The suit claims damages after the husband in the Andrews truck collision was killed. Case is represented by John L. Gano and Pat Beene. defense by A. R. Grambling and James Little.
In the Dollarhide field near Andrews Texas, Pure Oil Company No. 43-S Cowden produced from Silurian and Devonian pays with 24 hour potentials of 181 barrels at 431 gravity and 196 barrels at 445 gravity, both with no water. A second Cowden well reported 560 barrels at 44.2 gravity with 1,000 gallons acid treatment and no water. Sinclair No. 13 University in Shafter Lake Ellenburger yielded 510.41 barrels of 42.1 gravity with acid treatment. Stanolind Midland Farms No. 4-T-R/A-A completed for 115.34 barrels 33 gravity plus 31 percent water. Each well shows specific depths and casing pressures.
