Funeral plans for 37 year old Andrews resident James Warner Buck killed in a one car crash 14 miles west of Hobbs New Mexico outline a 230 pm service at First Assembly of God Church with Rev R V Luna officiating Buck died Friday at Sea General Hospital Hobbs He was a passenger in the car driven by Jack Keith Keith was injured but listed in satisfactory condition Buck was a World War II veteran and former U S Senate staffer now with O E Hall Drilling Co Survivors include two sons his mother sisters and a brother Burial will be at Andrews Cemetery Singleton Funeral Home in charge
Ray Phillips, former Andrews county sheriff and longtime lawman since 1943, announces candidacy for sheriff in the Democratic primary. He vows honest, efficient service and plans to meet every voter, citing his experience as city officer, deputy, and four-year sheriff.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce banquet features Dr. Noah Langdale Jr. as top speaker and presents the Outstanding Citizen Award. New officers will be introduced, and a comprehensive work program for ten committees will be unveiled for the upcoming year.
Eleven musicians from the high school depart Tuesday for Houston to join top state students at the Texas Music Association convention. Eight choir students directed by Dale Houston attend the meet while Band Director Bill Green leads three students. All-State singers Cheryl Mays and Jimmy Holcombe perform in the All-State Choir with alternates Rosemary Brown Vicki McComb James Eaton Don Dyess Tommy Hood and Bobby Lee.
Andrews County Tax Collector F. E. Peacock announced that starting Monday the office will issue 1964 automobile registration plates. A supply of Texas Department of Public Safety pamphlets on the Safe ty Responsibility Law changes going into effect this year will be handed to motorists with their car plates.
More than 400 people queued at the county tax assessor’s office Friday night to buy poll taxes, bringing qualified voters to 4 710. Floyd Peacock reported 4 150 poll taxes and 560 exemptions issued by closing time, with sales continuing into early Saturday. New 1964 license plates go on sale Monday at Peacock's office.
Robert L. Linder former Honda Drilling Co employee won a 14035 settlement in 109th District Court for alleged 1960 injury. The third trial in four years followed two prior rulings including a hung jury and a Court of Civil Appeals reversal. Judge Russell Austin presided.
Six foot five Randy Williams scored 36 points to lead the Andrews Mustangs to a 77 70 District 2 AAA win over Pecos at Pecos. Williams had 11 points in the first quarter and 26 by halftime. Pecos top scorers were Bill Walker with 19 and Larry Lumpkin with 16 as Andrews moves into a share of second place with Fort Stockton and awaits Seminole.
Congratulations are extended to Mr Carl Walker and his wife on the birth of a son at Permian General Hospital at 2 06 a m on January 30. The baby weighs 6 pounds 4 ounces.
The Foster Home at Terminal reported 65 children from 39 families lived there for 4711 days last year. Midland County placed 32 children, Ector 27, and Andrews 6. The non profit operates for Midland and Andrews counties. Ector pulled out to pursue private foster care. James Roberts elected board chair, with Frank Stickney as vice president and Ida Robinson as secretary-treasurer. The board invited Gaines and Winkler counties to join on the same basis.
Residents of Andrews were awakened by a loud blast at midnight Thursday. Theories ranged from a jet sonic boom to a political campaign escalation as residents sought answers from the newspaper, the sheriff, and neighbors.
