The second annual Miss Valentine contest in Andrews runs 8 am February 6 to noon February 11. Four high school girls compete, pictures run in editions February 6 and 9, votes by clipping photos, winner named February 11 with prizes and a February 14 dance at the Youth Center. The top three receive gifts. others get a free subscription.
A total of 2787 poll tax receipts were issued by the Friday deadline according to the county tax collector assessor office. This figure along with 60 exemptions indicates the county’s voting strength in the upcoming heavy election year. The county tax office reminded residents that 1958 license tags went on sale Saturday.
Funeral services for James William Moore of Dallas and former Andrews resident were held Friday at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Grissom officiating. Moore, 73, died Wednesday night in Dallas after a long illness. Burial followed at Andrews Cemetery under Singleton Funeral Home direction. He had worked over 17 years as produce manager at Farmers Supermarket and retired two years ago. A Mason and church member, he was born July 28, 1894 in Alabama. Survivors include wife Mary, son David of Palestine, daughter Mrs Randall Odem of Dallas, brother B W Moore of Grand Prairie, and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Bill Farmer, Roy Taylor, Floyd Peacock, Al McCarley, Jim Underwood, Byford Sealy, James Reed, and Ken St. Clair.
Two 13 year old runaways were caught in Colorado City after a missing persons alert. A stolen Odessa car was recovered within 20 minutes of the theft, drivers aged about 14 were detained by juvenile authorities. A hit and run damaged a parked car on Northwest 9th. Minor injuries in a two vehicle collision were treated.
Grand jury will begin Monday with selection at 10 30 a m. Panel lists include Carl Sealy R M Barnes J T Lisenbee Sr T A Roach and others. Petit jury reports Tuesday at 9 30 a m for civil docket cases before Judge G C Olsen.
Buck Criner former county employee announced his candidacy for Andrews County commissioner in precinct four He moved to Andrews in 1942 and has watched the area grow He is married to Lillie and they have three sons The Criners attend Second Baptist Church and Criner says he will meet voters to share his policies and seeks cooperation with other county officials to improve the community
McDonald Oil Corporation of Midland will drill No 1 University as a 6 200 foot wildcat in Northwest Andrews County ten miles northeast of Andrews. Phillips Petroleum and Monterey Oil announce multiple University Lands projects with several spud locations in the McFarland Queen field and nearby units. Humble Oil adds two Queensfield sites as activity rises in North Andrews. See oil back page.
Andrews Mustangs rout Ector 83 to 34 to pull even atop District 2 AAA with Pecos and Kermit after four 2 2 records. Roy Max Perrin led scoring with 21 points while Jay Sherrard added 15 and Ronnie Brice 14 as the team built a 26 6 first quarter lead and shot 43 percent.
Three year old David McAfee, bedridden with both legs in traction after a December accident in Shawnee, Okla, moved to Permian General Hospital where nurses dubbed him a little monkey for his bold play. He plans to stay about three more weeks as he recovers amid a brave, upbeat routine.
County auditor H. T. Wilson will undergo surgery Tuesday morning at the M. D. Anderson Clinic in Houston. Relatives say he has been treated there for several days. Wilson, Jr. Jimmy Wilson, Mrs. W. G. Beshears and Mrs. Marie Meroney depart for Houston this morning.
Funeral services for Eugene Brown Jr. 22, who perished when flames engulfed his parents home in the Flats Friday morning were held at Mount Olive Baptist Church with C. D. Collins of Big Spring officiating. His sister Mary Jo Brown survived with severe burns. he is survived by his parents, a brother Clifton Joe, a sister and paternal grandparents.
The annual Mothers March on polio raised 746.72 Friday night in a door to door effort. Mrs. Raymond Bristow chaired the event and named captains for town sections including Mrs. B. D. Sanders and Mrs. Leland Hamilton in northwest.
Evdie J. Ward sues Brownie Well Servicing Co and Forrest Oil Corp for 350000 in damages after falling about 35 feet from a rig 12 miles north of Andrews on October 13 1956. Ward alleges negligence by defendants and their employees caused the injuries. Ward is represented by attorney John Watts.
