The Andrews County Chamber auctioned gold silver and bronze commemorative medals to boost bicentennial activities. Most gold medals sold with strong demand. event extended to three and a half hours due to auction delays. The ceremony featured decoration, a notable citizen award, and a lengthy speech.
The 26 car traveling exhibit rolls into the Air Terminal spur from 12 noon Saturday to Monday night. Visitors can view 200 years of American progress including a genuine steam locomotive, marking the train’s first Texas stop.
Floyd Peacock veteran tax assessor and collector of Andrews county announced his candidacy for re election. Peacock has served five terms as tax assessor and collector and would seek votes before the May Democratic primary.
The city council approved legal action against Lakeside Equipment Co of Chicago and Brown-McKee Inc of Lubbock over equipment failures and warranty disputes at the water reclamation plant in Southeast Andrews County. The firm was later dropped from the suit after an executive session held behind closed doors. The plant has operated for years with ongoing failures possibly due to design faults. Lakeside represented plant equipment and Brown-McKee acted as general contractor.
Two Andrews High School students were suspended for the rest of the term after a school board hearing. The action followed reports of marijuana sale and possession at the campus dating from January 15 when a student was found with a marijuana cigarette. a second student was later involved in the case.
Weldon Baker, a longtime Andrews resident and World War II disabled veteran, announces his candidacy for Andrews County Constable in the Democratic primary. He and his wife Effie reside in Andrews and he says he is old enough for experience and young enough to do the job.
The 4th annual band booster presents a Mama Mia spaghetti supper Thursday at 5 30 p m in the high school cafeteria. Proceeds support the band program through private donations and school activities.
About 900 people attended the Andrews Chamber of Commerce banquet at Cryie Center where Gerald McCaskill, president of Commercial State Bank, was named Citizen of the Year. He was praised for long service on local boards and civic groups and his role in community development.
The state highway department will begin operating a new traffic signal Tuesday at the Main Street and NW Avenue intersection in Andrews. Russell Meal, district engineer, says the light will improve downtown traffic safety and flow. The project cost $18,500 and follows a city council request after a traffic survey.
Dr. John R. Kantor, a local physician in the new clinic expansion, is recuperating in the Cardiac Care Unit at Permian General Hospital after an apparent heart attack Tuesday evening. A hospital spokesman said his condition was slightly improved Friday afternoon.
A Thursday night ribbon cutting officially opened the Andrews Senior Citizens Center located across from the Civic Center on the Big Spring Highway. About 100 people attended with speakers County Judge Roy D Bennett Mayor Louis Miller Winfred Pilley and Cyrel Collins. The center is growing under supervisor Sue Craig and is a joint county city project serving 1400 citizens over 60. Janitor Slim Mathis was listed among staff.
