Carroll Cobb, 25, a Seminole native and UT pre law student, announced his candidacy for Texas 99th District representative. The district covers Andrews Gaines Dawson and Lynn counties. Cobb plans a full campaign and aims to complete his law degree in early 1954.
Mrs Lynn Rice suffered a broken arm when a head on collision caused her car to overturn ten miles south of Levelland on the Brownfield highway. She was taken to Levelland Hospital for treatment as her husband Lynn Rice escaped injury.
A. C. Lively and his son Ray enjoyed a weekend in El Paso. They were seen visiting local sights and dining at area establishments.
Mrs. C. V. Campbell reports that 1300 has been contributed to the March of Dimes Fund to date. Persons not contacted are asked to mail in donations to County Chairman C. V. Campbell or Mrs. B. F. Seay or to call 175F1 for pickup.
The Spanish Club at A. H. S. presents its annual all school Variety Show on February 20 1952 in the high school auditorium. Judges pick three top acts from high school and one each from junior high elementary and primary. First billing goes to the Lion's club Amateur Show on March 13. Admission is nine cents.
Billy Graham film Mr. Texas and brothers Bo and Dick Baker drew a record audience to a Fort Worth high school auditorium. About 1200 attended with 200 standing. Baker brothers led singing and preached. 40 conversions, 12 surrenders, and 15 rededications reported. Local Baptist pastors hosted the event for Gaines Andrews Yoakum association.
Payne's Ponies, led by tournament MVP Tommy Singleton and all star Billy Spear and J. Frank Davis, defeated Menard Iraan Lakeview and Big Lake to win the Ozona tournament. The Mustangs opened 62 33 against Menard and finished 43 34 in the final, with Hamilton and Spear keying a third quarter surge.
Several hundred attendees watched the Sneak Preview of the h2 FORD display at Johnny Smith Motor Company showrooms. A Fashion Shoppe review featured Andrews' models wearing spring colors crayon blue and mimosa yellow with high waists and full skirts, while cigars and light refreshments were offered. Notable models included Francis Gerain, Thora Payne, Mickie Sparks, June Elmore, Shirley Morris, Beth Cordes, Patsy Burden, and Charlene McNeil.
An aroused Andrews public swept into the Tax Assessor's office last night to push poll tax receipts for the county to a record high. Over 1907 poll tax receipts had been issued by nine last night. Exemptions will push the total well over the 2000 mark. The News stayed on the phone most of yesterday reminding citizens of the poll tax deadline.
Andrews county 4 H club committee meets at 7 30 pm Friday in the courthouse to outline plans and a calf feeding program for the coming year. Committee members include H R Doty Arch Roach H S Whitenburg Gene Irwin Gordon Cox H S Earle and M A Boyer. Public invited.
Four Andrews squads meet Kermit Yellowjackets tonight with the A and B stringers chasing district momentum. Seminole’s win Saturday sets a tense scene as junior high teams also face off while Big Spring tests linger from Tuesday’s games.
City manager L. B. Parrish announced a broad expansion of the street lighting network. Mercury vapor lights around the courthouse will extend along major highways while additional fixtures will be installed on North Main and along the Chrysler place to reach the community building and residential streets. Incandescent lights will cover several blocks on NE Second and nearby avenues to illuminate busy areas.
Twenty six Andrews Public Schools teachers will receive art certificates after completing an In Service Art Education Workshop at the Primary School. Sessions ran January 29 to 31 with evening classes from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 guided by Clyde C. Clack of the Binney and Smith Co. The course covered modern art education philosophies and hands on media use. A list of enrolled teachers is provided.
West Texas State Senator Kilmer Corbin, 32, announces bid for a second term highlighting accomplishments in redistricting, Tech College funding, and the Veterans Land Program. He notes gains for the 28th Senatorial District and cites a $2 million annual state aid to higher education and a $4.5 million building program. Backed by a law career in Lubbock, he emphasizes representation for West Texas and pride in district gains.
