Babson foresees pre election pledges of peace and prosperity for 1957 tempered by Russia. He warns inflation, higher costs, tighter credit, and rising unemployment, with small firms failing and large corporations facing bank funding and expansion delays.
A five year exploratory water lease proposal for University Blocks 4 1 and 2 was prepared in Midland and to be presented to the Board of Regents in Austin January 11. The lease sets a 500 annual option with future prices per thousand gallons and minimums. Andrews water officials and university lease staff outlined Block 4 as best for supply and urged attendance at the Regents meeting to explain the Andrews situation.

L. B. Williams was elected vice president of the Andrews Chamber of Commerce at a regular meeting of the board Friday night. Jim Herzberger was voted treasurer. The session focused on a water project with chamber manager Harry Cowan. Cowan outlined options on UT land blocks and an Austin Regents hearing set for Jan. 11. Committees were named for the coming year and a banquet set for Jan. 18 with Jack Stamper as speaker.
Town will close on New Year’s Day with county offices city hall and the post office shut Tuesday and most businesses also closing for the holiday.
G W Sparks longtime Andrews resident died at his home 700 SW 1st about 9 15 am last Sunday He was born September 25 1891 in Arkansas and had lived here about 10 years serving as shop foreman for Superior Welding Co Services were held 2 pm Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Grissom officiating Burial followed in Andrews Cemetery under Singleton Funeral Home Pallbearers were J E B De Shazo W E Langley Willard Wright D W Brown J M Pollard Vernes Sheppard James Fox and Joe Herring He is survived by his wife Nellie one son Roy of Andrews and three daughters Mrs Thelma Lee SPARKS
The county invites the public to tour the remodeled courthouse with two new wings. County officials completed payment on the project Dec. 21, and BMFP, the Lubbock general contractor, finished the work 61 days ahead of schedule. Open house runs Monday from 1 to 5 p.m. The added facilities include expanded clerk and tax offices, new spaces for the county judge, attorney, sheriff, jail, radio room, and a law library.
New county officers will take oath at 9 am Tuesday in the county courthouse. Sam Smith will be sworn in for another term as county clerk. Ray Phillips becomes sheriff, Russell Austin county attorney, Floyd Peacock tax assessor and collector. Max Ramsey to take district attorney for three counties. Joe Albright to be sworn in as county commissioner. Fannie Mathews to continue as county treasurer.
District Judge G C Olsen presided over a session here Thursday and Friday, disposing of nine civil cases. All were dismissed and involved parties received 30 days to apply for reinstatement. He returns January 15 to hear a heavy civil docket. no criminal cases were heard.
Glasscock wildcat Lonnie Glasscock in West Andrews County 17 miles west of Andrews set casing at 4550 feet in Permian dolomite to test for discovery. Continental Oil Company No 2 in Central Andrews County reports dual production from Wolfcamp and Pennsylvanian with outputs of 200 and 292 barrels in 13 hours, and calculated daily potentials. Phillips Petroleum No 74 in University Lands plans an 8100-foot wildcat in Northwest Andrews County, 25 miles northwest of Andrews. See back page for details.
After 13 years as sheriff, Floyd Peacock leaves office to become tax assessor and collector. His record includes 171 indictments with 94 convictions, roughly 50 arrests per year, and more than 1 500 arrests this year with 1 200 jailed. He oversaw a six-man force, aided by county and city officers, and handled five capital cases with notable sentences.
