The 1939 year ends with gratitude and caution as the News pledges to improve in 1940. The editor hopes the paper becomes a stronger force for progress, kindness, and information in Andrews County while noting potential political races and strong holiday business. County Judge W G Burkett announces re election and several aspirants may enter the race next week.
W G Burkett declares candidacy for re election as County Judge and Ex officio County Superintendent of Andrews County. He pledges to personally solicit votes and influence voters under the Democratic Primary Act in 1940.
Mrs E W Ward was taken to Odessa Wednesday with an acute appendicitis. She is at her brother’s home in Odessa to receive care with her two children. The Wards had stayed six weeks at the Llano Tourist Camps. Her husband left Sunday for Lovington New Mexico and was unreachable by phone.
D C Nix and L D Jones made a business trip to Lubbock on Wednesday and Dennis brought back a load of feed. Nix discussed plans for a Creamery Station in Andrews. Numerous local relatives and visitors are noted, with travel to Wheeler and Hobbs New Mexico. Rev Nix, ex-pastor in Clovis, attended Andrews events. Mayor Guthrie quips about holiday visitors.
Texas Highway Department reports 521 grade separations built since 1917 and 814 crossings relocated through August 1939, with 33 and 16 more under construction or approved. Signals installed at 148 crossings, contributing to a 14 percent drop in railroad crossing fatalities in the first ten months of 1939 versus 1938. Law limits closing crossings.
Mrs Dave Sisson and children visited relatives in Colorado City during the holidays. Ida Sisson, living with her son Dave, visited daughter Mrs Jgwell Jameson of Midland. Mr and Mrs Mike Hughie and daughters Charlsie and Dorothy of Roby, Texas, visited in brother Pete Hughie's home. Hughie children Allene and FD visited their father. Harry Abshur handed the editor four one dollar bills for the News Tuesday. Think a lot Harry.
Jal High School in New Mexico issues a challenge to the Texas state high school football champions after the Waco-Lubbock winner game in Dallas. Superintendent J L Burke invites school officials to contact for arranging a date and site, stressing money is not the motive and emphasizing the value of a state champions contest.
The Andrews Public School will reopen January 2 following a twelve day Christmas recess. Teachers are expected to return over the weekend for the long stretch ahead. Snow during the holidays is noted with some appreciation.
A brief notice invites a woman to live at Camp to help with work with rent and utilities free. Mrs C E Wilson at El Lano Courts is the contact. Other notes report Mig Odom of Dallas returning home after holidays with her parents Mr and Mrs W J Moore. Mrs Pred C Blair of Fort Worth visited the Fisher family over the holidays. Dorothy and Lucile Waldron enjoyed a pleasant holiday trip home to Granberry, Texas.
A five inch snowfall covered Andrews County and West Texas causing car accidents and burst pipes. Snow began Sunday night and continued into Monday with flurries Tuesday and Thursday. Temperature dropped to six above, roads were hazardous and roofs failed under snow weight.
F A Vestal, Camp Superintendent of the Soil Conservation Service CCC camp in La mesa Texas, compares a soil conservation district to a high line. Farmers join voluntarily and need not adopt practices unless desired. The SCS lends equipment and technical aid, with 100 of 130 districts receiving help and CCC labor aiding 81 districts.
The Baptist and Methodist churches held Christmas tree and festival events. The Methodist festival occurred Saturday night followed by a tree display, while the Baptist event took place Sunday night. Both churches featured programs before Santa Claus distributed gifts to attendees.
R. L. Bullard comes back from a holiday trip visiting relatives in San Angelo and Fort Stockton.
Miss Loma Smith came home Tuesday after a holiday visit with her parents at Big Spring.
Willard Price age 36 remains under care at Headlee Hospital O dessa after a Christmas Eve bicycle crash on the highway south of his home. He suffered a facial wound, possible concussion, and was unconscious since the collision when two passing cars tried to avoid the bicycle rider. Doctors report slow improvement and cautious optimism for recovery.
Mr and Mrs K Ambrose and their son are visiting relatives in Ada Oklahoma for the Christmas holidays and expect to return home later this week.
A. F. McKercher of the Trip plehorn Oil Company wrecked his car 12 miles north of Odessa at the Odessa Midland cut off. He escaped with no injuries, but the vehicle was badly smashed.
