A wartime reminiscence honors soldiers overseas at Christmas. Vivid scenes describe a makeshift Christmas in a Vietnam or distant front setting with a bush behind a candle, fruitcake, cigarets, and a record player. The piece ends with a personal voice sharing intimate memories of past holidays.
Officials urge careful driving over the three day weekend with a forecast that about 55 motorists may die on Texas roads. DPS stresses defensive driving, safe speeds, and sobriety while city police warn of town wrecks. Andrews closes Monday for Yuletide. schools end Friday and resume January 3.
Raymond W. Tipton 40 a captain was named temporary acting chief by City Manager Lyn Wilson to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Police Chief James Clark. Tipton joined the force in October 1962 and is the department's only captain.
The Tri County Home outlines Christmas activities with gifts and refreshments for children. Harold Cox invites help from board members and the community, noting the home has aided over 700 children since 1955 and hosted 100+ children this past year. Donations are sent to Terminal Station Midland or to Cox at Commercial State Bank.
The A Cappella Choir directed by Tom Adams sang for the Rotary Club on Wednesday featuring Come Christmas Time Sleigh Bells Twas the Night Before Christmas Mary's Boy Child and A Child Is Born of Mary. Soloists were Hugh McDowell Monty Webb and Dug Belcher. The junior high choir directed by Duane Riegel performed numbers from their Monday night Christmas concert.
The Smaller Communities Team of the Texas Employment Commission ends its local labor survey at 5 p.m. December 21 and will reopen December 28 in Andrews. By now 566 residents aged 16 and older have registered. TEC invites townspeople to participate while shopping, hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in offices beside the Firestone store across from the Commercial State Bank.
Downtown Lions Club named lighting winners for its residential decoration contest. J B Steed at 1302 NW 9th won over $50 category with rooftop lights and yard scenes. Jim Munsell at 1103 Alpine was runner up. Under $50 winner Paul Brevard at 1010 NW 7th with a Charlie Brown scene. second place J W Shockley at 1412 NW 7th with a tree.
Andrews Goodfellows organized a Christmas project aiding about 75 families with screened boxes containing canned goods staples cake mixes gelatin flour sugar potatoes and fresh produce plus chickens and fruit. Toys were allocated by children ages. Joe Zant led food and packing with work finished Thursday evening and pickup set for Friday at the Goodfellow Room. Matt and Bobby Ellises provided accommodations. the group usually serves 85 to 100 families each year.
Mrs. Charlie Jeffreys aged 88 died December 19 in Graham. Funeral services were held there Thursday. Survivors include two sons Tom and Earl, both of Andrews.
Lynn Rogers son of Mr and Mrs Paul Rogers will speak at the First Baptist Church Sunday night with slides about his summer mission work at the Baptist Medical Center in Narigu Ghana He is a UT Medical School Galveston student and Andrews High School 1960 graduate Two nurses joined him on the trip sponsored by the Baptist Student Union of Texas The youth clinic and hospital treated about 200 patients daily Public invited to attend the 730 p m event.
The Andrews County News will not publish the Thursday issue December 28 as part of an annual holiday break. The paper notes the tradition allows staff to spend time with families and wishes readers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with the next issue set for Sunday, December 31.
